I think I am going to just focus on the Main Story line at first then do the other stuff after hopefully with mods existing by then. I remember some of those dungeons just being long and boring.

When I get off work I might buy it. I need a new graphics card. I had to downgrade my RTX 2070 recently to my 12 year old GTX 970.... Hopefully it will run at 1080p pretty well.
Downloading presently.

I'm not sure what kind of character I want to make. I may go battle mage, but I do love sneaking and assassination stuff with Dark Brotherhood.

Argh!

This isn't Skyrim, stealth archers aren't even close to the top of the heap.

I'm going to make a criminal scumbag melee fighter type character since the character starts off in jail he may as well already be a legit criminal let free due to the crisis. Probably end up leveling everything I can though.

I plan on doing the Knights dlc first, then Shivering Isles, and then the main quest.

Weird I know, but that was exactly how I played through the game the first time when I got it. And it was awesome. I want to relive that.
Ive forgotten a lot about this game. Its going to be nice picking it back up again. I dont know what class Im going to pick yet, but I usually go spell sword.
You gonna do somethin' or just stand there and bleed?

You probably already know this, but gaining infamy via the Thieve's Guild or Dark Brotherhood will make you unworthy to wield the Crusader's relics, forcing you to redo the pilgrimage to wear them again. Not a game-breaking hindrance by any stretch, but I usually save KotN for last for this reason.

Does it let you start after downloading a portion of it or do you have to download it all before you can start playing?

Preloading shaders is a good sign for EU5 unfortunately the engine is very prone to micro stutters. Digital Foundry talks about this a lot. Even more unfortunately though, this compiling often doesn't actually capture all the shaders

Yeah, the vast majority of Oblivion's dungeons make Skyrim's look like carefully-crafted bespoke experiences by comparison.

Typically the only reason to go dungeon-diving outside of quests is for rare loot / Spell Tome hunting, and even then the best loot is limited to certain dungeon types. Monster dungeons (imps, spriggans, ogres, minotaurs, etc) surprisingly have the best loot overall loot tables, with an even higher chance of getting Spell Tomes than conjurer / necromancer dungeons (though necromancers have a small chance of carrying Spell Tomes on their persons).

No idea if the remaster makes any alterations to this, though.

Just curious. I won't actually be able to download until I get home lol. I was hoping to find out if I could at least start it tonight if I have time.

It'd be cool if the remaster added more static loot to dungeons but that sounds outside the scope of the project. It seems to be mostly a visual upgrade.

Fun thing about that: playing the original in 60fps speeds this glitch up by double! I recently got the fast-forward glitch (the precursor to the Glitch of Doom) at 130 hours when it normally hits around 250, indicating that the GoD would've hit around the 200 hour mark. Thankfully setting the game back to 30fps seems to have set the 'timer' as well as animation speeds back to normal on that character.

Remains to be seen if the remaster addresses / fixes what's arguably the worst glitch in Bugthesda's history.

I went Argonian this playthrough. Night vision, water breathing, and poison immunity is underrated.

Yea! At that time I was roleplaying really hard and didn't know that, but having to do the pilgrimage and "redeem" myself was actually an awesome experience, especially going into the main quest after doing so. I felt like a real hero. I was really young though. I wonder if I'll get annoyed by it now.
Also don't forget people, a tip as old as time.

Make a hard save right at the end of the opening dungeon. Right before you can reset your race, skills, etc. That way you can just skip the intro and make a new character right as you enter Cyrodil proper.

I made a dark elf. Gonna go sword and board with a bow and destruction magic. Might dabble in some other magics as well.

Watching your character sprint in 3rd person view is kinda funny. Maybe it's just me, but it looks odd. Not complaining, just found it funny.

And walking around the Imperial market sure does bring up some memories.

The animation looked a little gotta-take-a-dump-y when I saw it in the reveal, but whatever, I'll take it in whatever form it's offered.

Although the lack of sprint never bothered me in Oblivion because I knew I'd get my Speed up to Flash-levels eventually. Going back and playing New Vegas was where the lack of a sprint option really hurt.

And in the other topic people found that non-script extender mods can be ported over almost wholesale (ignoring graphical ones for the obvious reasons). Thus hard confirming that you can mod the games no matter when Bethisda says.

All the lack of support means is it may take longer to get high quality mods and they may not be compatible with each other on the same level you would get from a supported game. Apparently the underlying frame work is still the oblivion one, they just aren't going to spend time getting the full support main entries receive.
I'm dying to get my hands on it after work and spend my entire evening in the character creator.

Yeah, the lack of 'official' mod support just means you'll see simpler stuff that avoids the use of the script-extender.

E.g. I remember back in the day I had a mod that made it easier to see things while swimming underwater. Simple stuff like that, if still useful in the new visual format of the remaster, would be easy enough to do.

What are some beginner tips

(assuming things haven't gotten changed / nerfed)

Choosing a Breton character is pretty much easy mode. 2nd-best innate magicka boost, and 50% magic resistance is great in and of itself, but once you find a Mundane Ring you'll be completely immune to magic.
