I liked Maverick more. Had more fighter jet action than the first movie.

Plus, that Kvochur's Bell maneuver was badass. I saw the movie in theaters with one of my friends and even she said "holy shit" out loud, at that part.

Maverick is a better made movie, but I can see people liking the original for nostalgia and/or the 80s cheesy style (not a negative)

The enemy state is more than likely Iran since they are the only other country to be sold F-14s and still uses them today.

The 3rd act of Maverick might be one of the greatest 3rd acts in a blockbuster movie. Maverick is like a 10/10 film. Top Gun is a 7/10 on a good day imo.

The big setpiece at the end of Maverick is fantastic but the rest of it is a retread of the first movie mixed with every generic movie trope. The first one is a lot of the same but the 80s lack of self awareness makes it fun rather than boring.

While I enjoyed watching the original Top Gun numerous times when it was aired almost weekly on TBS back in the day, my vote goes to Maverick.

I walked into the movie theater ready to laugh during its premiere, but it knocked my socks off and far exceeded all my expectations. Yes, both are good movies in their own right, but I think Maverick is the better movie.
