The 2017 Houston Astros won Major League Baseball's World Series in part by stealing the opposing team's signs and communicating them to their players on the field by banging on a trash can in the dugout (among other measures; they were pretty involved tbh). What got them in trouble was using electronics (think police wires) to communicate what the other team was doing while their players were on the field. That's an explicit rules violation and IIRC, the Astros' ownership was fined and their manager and GM were suspended for a season.
