Online dating and the current culture/economy destroying the concept of the third space completely ruined dating and relationships for a lot of people.

Dating is fucked in the modern day but it has nothing to do with feminism or whatever incels like to blame

Our society is hyper-individualized and we're disconnected from one another. There's just a lack of healthy communal spaces offline. Plus everything is super expensive now that so many young people are spending all their time just trying to get by.

Capitalism is killing dating.
Yes we're being condescending
Yes that means we're talking down to you
Cant even read the article, as I refuse to create an account with the nytimes.

That being said, I can guess much of what it is talking about. I can only speak for myself, but I pretty much started staying home as much as possible as I neared middle aged life (of which I now am in). I had one, very long 8 year relationship that ended at the end of my twenties, and then had several smaller ones in my early thirties, but honestly found no satisfaction in others company, so decided to focus on myself and what I enjoy, and none of that involves other people.

I had a brief fling and hook up this past November, but that was the first time in 3 years. Honestly, it was okay, but I didnt crave anymore after, and if anything, I hated the constant texting and phone calls. I really love my peace and quiet, and overall lack of relationship drama.
Before me things create were none, save things eternal, and eternal I endure.

the average man is unfuckable and women can't trust men

Simple as that. I was at the casinos the other day and even a can of beer will run you $10 or more.

Ah ok, so sexually assault you and then get you drunk so that I can take advantage of your compromised decision making abilities?

all the hot men already have girlfriends(or boyfriends, or whatever)

many others are afraid they'll get called a creep and laughed at and posted online

but if women who are "8s or 9s" are yearning for a date they could try talking to a man first.

I was going to add some sarcastic end to this, but I lost it. So I'm just going to post what I typed.
I could see you, but I couldn't hear you You were holding your hat in the breeze Turning away from me In this moment you were stolen...
A lot of women dislike being approached, and there is little way to tell the difference before you approach them, so out of consideration a lot of men have been forced to stop entirely.
Sorry.
Not sorry.

Yeah, there isn't any place to approach a woman in public without it being creepy. Bars I guess? But that's too expensive and I don't drink alcohol so it's not for me.

Online all you ever hear from women is "I won't date anyone unless they are 6'+ tall". I'm sure most women IRL don't care about that but when guys are only hearing and seeing this online, it's makes <6' guys feel like it's not even worth trying.

Then there are so many videos of guys approaching women and women recording it and posting it on social media "look at this creep trying to pick me up". Again, it's probably mostly fake ragebait shit or only a tiny amount of women IRL really do this, but when it's all over the place on the internet, it makes men afraid to approach women fearing they will be called a creep and blasted all over social media for it.

Me personally, (if I actually went outside) I'd never approach a woman these days. I'm only average looking but I could absolutely see myself being called "creepy".
Like it or leave it. Hey, where are you going?
I kind of hate this comment because it gives me weird sigma/alpha male bullshit vibes or whatever, but there's a degree of truth in this:

Men arent scared.
Theyre numb.

Approaching women, in the past, was a sacred expression of courage, humor, risk, and play.

Now? Its suspect.

Every move is pre-framed as intrusive.
The signal that once meant shes smiling, shes open now gets drowned in decades of cultural noise where even desire is framed as threat.

Men adapted.
Not by rebelling.
By withdrawing.

Deconstruction of the Male Psyche

What the system did:
Removed male initiation rites
Pathologized masculine instinct
Mocked earnestness
Made trying look desperate
Made detachment look cool
Made failure feel existential

So boys stopped learning how to be men.
And men started learning how to be invisible.

This is not dysfunction.
Its a rational adaptation to an inverted incentive system.

Hidden Truth

Most women still want to be approached.
But most men no longer trust the context.

They dont believe whats being signaled matches whats actually safe.
So they hold back.
They freeze.
They stay silent.

And ironically?
That silence gets interpreted as indifference or weakness.

It isnt either.
Its a silent protest against incoherence.

At a deeper level, this is whats happening:

Masculine energy is retreating from the world.

Not just romantically, spiritually.
Men arent chasing.
Men arent building.
Men arent leading.

Theyre ghosting civilization itself not because they gave up, but because they stopped believing the game was fair.

And without belief?
There is no approach.
No pursuit.
No dance.

Just the void.

That woman in the video?

Shes not just waiting for a man to approach.
Shes unknowingly standing in the ruins of a collapsed ritual.

And no one has told her yet:

The men didnt stop showing up because they changed.
They stopped because the world told them not to.

And now?

Theyre gone.
Not angry.
Not bitter.
Just elsewhere.

Thats the truth.

There definitely are a lot of mixed messaging when it comes to the appropriate ways to approach women and asking them out for a date.

Some women seem to suggest they want men to take the initiative and actively "court" so to speak, while others are saying that they don't want that approach at all and it's "ick" or creepy when guys randomly ask them out.

Meanwhile COVID kinda messed with society in terms of being socially out in society and has really made us a more insular, introverted society. Combined with capitalism "encouraging" people to be constantly connected to their phone, doom scrolling, etc. etc... like, it's definitely changed things.

Thank you for fighting the fight for so long for me.
Dating has been gameified by apps, and it's turned the experience into a nightmare for everyone.

Everyone seeking to streamline their experience, min-max, increase efficiency, no time wasting, red flags, shit meme culture turning everyone paranoid about their abs, their height, the size of their arse . . .

Keep it low key, low stakes, don't write people off because of what fucking social media told you. Have fun and let whatever is going to happen, happen.

It won't guarantee success, but you'll enjoy yourself more anyway.

if you're at a bar you don't *have* to buy a woman a drink to approach her. That's actually kinda weird, because it makes it seem like an entry fee or something.

just talk to her for a few minutes first and if you hit it off, then offer to buy her a drink

I am reminded of that one commercial, what was it from? The one guy stops another from approaching a woman and there's no actual context beyond the assumption that approaching is bad. It caused a big fuss on the internet for a bit.
And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to your span of life?

society is hyper-individualized

I've talked a lot about this with my therapist (and the loss of third spaces) and how it's just such a soul-rotting feeling not having any sense of community, nowhere you feel you belong.

This is, of course, entirely by design because the less connected people are the less likely they are to stand together against real threats.

It's because of this that I feel fairly jealous of people who are part of religious organizations as they have a community built in to them (to an extent.)

Im not approaching women because Im married. But if I was single, Id have no issue approaching them. Ive done it many times before and never had any issues with it. Though, here, I wouldnt necessarily need to. Women approach me all the time. The culture is different.

Crazy thought. Maybe these women could approach the men instead.
The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.
Since my divorce, I have always kept an eye open for the right chance to talk to someone, but it can be discouraging. I mean I once had a woman that makes Mama Fratelli look like Marilyn Monroe tell me I wasn't good looking enough for her. Honestly I'd probably have a better shot with an attractive lady.
I only appear to be out of line because I am the only one who is in line.

Some of y'all have some real shitty takes.

There absolutely suitable environments and methods to approaching anyone (man, woman, everything in between), some of y'all don't know how to identify that and instead are blaming the person you might approach.
Got a coworker that is super guilty of this
Dude will be dating someone and eventually it'll break off and every fucking time he'd tell me "I looked back at everything and I didn't do anything wrong."

I used to try and give him actual advice, but he never fucking listens. So now any time he does dumb shit I tell him "This is why women won't talk with you."

Dating apps and dating within my friend group worked well enough. And I did have a short relationship where she cold approached me (but she actually had a boyfriend so that was fucked up)

Im aware its the combination of a lot of things. The economy, post covid world where people go out much less, women having more professional jobs compared to modern men..

Im not trying to suggest that women are the only ones guilty of this, but there are definitely a lot of women who overestimate their worth/appeal on the dating market, and its every bit as problematic as when men do it.

I have a colleague who is 42, has never been able to attract the kind of man she deems good enough for her so has never had a long term relationship. Surely at some point she should have questioned if maybe the super rich, Adonis-style men shes convinced she deserves dont value her as much as she wants them to?
