I'm a little unclear on what exactly he was convicted of. "Violating Breonna Taylor's rights" is a little vague, and doesn't suggest to me "shots fired."
For that matter, every shot he did fire could have been the one that killed her. It's just his luck that none of them were. Seems a little nuts to me that bad aim makes the difference between this and a potential second degree murder charge.
They should be convicted of far worse.
These fucking idiots pulled into an apartment complex and tried to raid Taylor's house. Once Taylor's boyfriend fired at them (as he had every right to do, because they fucking raided his house at midnight), these morons went on a massive spree of reckless endangerment. One of them (this officer who was sentenced) literally started firing blindly at the side of the apartment building.
If you're thinking "Wait, wouldn't blindly firing gunshots at a building risk the possibility of some bullets hitting the neighbors' apartments and recklessly endangering them?", that is
exactly what happened.
The officer that was sentenced literally fired blindly at an apartment complex - Taylor's curtains were drawn so he couldn't see what he was shooting at, and his aim was so fucking bad that some of his bullets went into a neighboring apartment.
I am of the opinion that if you are a police officer who has such a blatant disregard for public safety that you would blindly fire at an apartment complex and endanger the lives of innocent bystanders...life imprisonment seems appropriate.
