Trying to play a Call of Duty game these days is such a pain in the ass.

Step 1. Launch Call of Duty
Step 2. The Battle.net launcher opens up. Click on Play.
Step 3. Get bombarded with credits on all the studios it takes to make this dumb fucking game, skip it
Step 4. Advertisement! Buy the battle pass! Look! skip this too
Step 5. Now you're in the actual hub where you can finally pick WHICH Call of Duty game you want to play, even though you only have one. Select that one.
Step 6. The hub closes, and re-launches the actual game you wanted to play in the first place.
Step 7. Call of Duty Modern Warfare II has an update, you must quit to desktop and restart.
Step 8. Go through steps 1-6 again
Step 9. Sit through the intro credits movie for this game for a bit until you can skip it.
Step 10. Now you can finally fucking play your fucking game

I remember OG MW2 where it was literally

Step 1. Insert disc
Step 2. mash the A button to very quickly skip through the intro stuff
Step 3. select multiplayer
Step 4. search for game

and it took like 10 seconds

Looked up how the hell I can just launch the actual game I want to play and skip all that other shit and apparently there's not a way to actually do this

step 3 battlenet requires an update but doesnt tell you until after you've already signed in for some reason

Oh hey, now MW2 doesn't even fucking launch. I get through the hub, it says it's launching MW2, then kicks me back to the battle.net launcher which says "playing now" and then just switches to "play" without doing anything

Fuck it I'm getting one of those fancy Anbernics and just playing old games for the rest of my life

Overwatch 2 isn't bad anymore. I wouldn't give them money, but I'm having fun playing. You can earn enough credits to play every other battlepass for free also.

If you try to play an older CoD game on PC up to CoD WWII, it is exploitable by remote code execution (RCE). Activision refuses to patch that major vulnerability yet still continues to sell those old titles.

I got WWII ages ago from humble bundle and it will never be installed.

My friends really like it so I feel I have to play it. It's kinda fun still, but it's COD. It's a freaking hog of a game too. Takes waaaay too much storage space.

Then you play and it's full of people who play it 24/7 so getting a win in certain modes takes a lot of luck.

Yeah I just play FFA in MWII as stress relief. But now I cant even do that :(

They actually just today disconnected MWII and MWIII from the CoD HQ and started offering them as separate downloads. Now I can finally delete that god-awful CoD HQ for good. MWIII is the only modern CoD game I care about, I couldn't give two shits about BO6 or the upcoming BO7.

BO6 is the current CoD game that launched last November, and BO7 is already announced to be coming out later this year. Don't bother with either, the franchise has gone to complete and total shit.

I am firmly middle aged. I used to be a huge cod fan but I stopped playing after Ghosts. I bought one randomly like 5 years ago due to friend group pressure. It was my old cod gang. We all stopped around the same time. We are all around the same age

We all found the user experience like OP described a huge problem. Myself, barely understood what mode or how to get to just regular tdm. It ws sensory overload. It actively made me not want to play. It felt hostile.

I still play pubg with the same guys. We all complain about how extra the main menu is. Last week we got together to play and the game was just screaming weird k pop lyrics at us at the main menu. We could barely could hear one another talk and it took 20 minutes to figure out how to turn it off.

I mean I get aging out of things. Kids deserve their own things even if I don't understand it. I am not the market anymore. But this design seems objectively worse. Like it is trying to be confusing on purpose and overwhelming on purpose. I just think it seems hostile and I feel like it somehow must make soon much money else it wouldn't be done.

It's a damn shame that the older CoD games are so fucked up like that on PC. I've been playing a ton of WW2 on Xbox ever since it dropped into Game Pass and having a blast with it, and I wish you PC players could do the same. This game doesn't have any of the "modern CoD problems" like tons of ads for store bundles, slow matchmaking times, strict SBMM that's willing to sacrifice connection quality to match you with similarly skilled opponents, lobbies disbanding after every game, operator skins that look out of place and clash with the art style, and so on. Plus, the multiplayer in this game is so smooth and fun.

The only CoD games I see myself playing for the foreseeable future are WW2 and MWIII.
