Imagine being a Greenland shark. They aren't fully mature until they reach about 150 years old and their pregnancy takes 8 to 12 years. Their maximum life expectancy is at least 300 years but could possibly be as high as 500 years. And they're nearly blind, having a parasite attached to their eyes their entire life.

Ever since seeing tautogs in an aquarium, Ive felt a strange kinship with them. Not only do they have human-like teeth, but the way they direct their gaze is much more humanlike than the vacant stare most fish seem to have. I saw one chilling in a tube, and as I was about to leave, its friend slid into the tube and it made me laugh.

A few years back blobfish became fairly popular due to being deemed so ugly they became cute. Then people found out that their distinctive look came from dead specimens who had been horribly disfigured due to explosive decompression. They sort of dropped out of pop culture as a result.
