god the way they name this shit is so funny
Lol, tell me about it. My whole life Ive been using pre-builts because Im not very tech savvy and Im worried I might brick my PC if I tried changing parts on my own and fucking up. The most Ive done is upgrading my RAM because it doesnt involve unscrewing parts, just pop it out and insert a new stick. Simple.
But this month I decided to try my hand at DIY PC upgrading and Im learning so many brands & terms out there. Aside from getting advice from savvier friends, chatgpt also helped a lot in checking for compatibility and what the various GPU brand series mean.
Ive upgraded 4 parts in my PC:
CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 to Ryzen 5 5600 (new)
GPU: Zotac GTX 1660 to Asus RTX 3070 TUF (used)
PSU: 1st Player 600w Bronze to Cooler Master 750w Gold (new)
CPU cooler: Stock AMD fan to Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE (new)
When it comes to CPU cooler though, I also had the same reaction as you with all the jazzy names. Mugen, peerless assassin, phantom spirit, royal pretor, etc. I was undecided on using air or liquid cooling system (colloquially called AIO) but finally decided on air cooling because its less prone to failure.
The first time I look at the higher end air coolers, I had no idea they can get so HUGE, its practically triple the size of the stock coolers that Ive been using all my life haha. I was still staring at it with disbelief when I held it in my hands yesterday.
Overall, it was a pretty challenging but fun experience for me as a first timer (Im 40 to put it in context). But it didnt trigger a spark or anything in me, Im not gonna turn into a PC enthusiast after this lol. I feel my current rig is solid enough and I dont plan to upgrade again for at least another 4 years.
