Exactly. If it were only a rare thing that didn't happen often, or if it were optional and players had the option to play without them (like you suggested, an alternate format) then it wouldn't be as bad.
I remember a random post in the internet about a theory that when a game starts getting too much cameos and crossovers, it is just a matter of time for the identity of said product to be completely crippled.
I wonder if the reverse also happens, when a character gets in too many franchises as crossovers, like Shovel Knight and 2B.
But when these crossovers basically take over the game and overtake the identity that it's had for so long, that's when the hardcore fans start giving up on the game.
Franchises likes to take die hard fans for granted. So thats why they don't really care about stepping on their toes when taking risks. However, when the tourists end up not staying and the hardcore fans starts leaving, then shit is start hitting the fan.
