Not to say I absolutely disliked Grimmer from Monster, but the entire story shifting to his perspective for a bit was weird initially and had me wishing for more Tenma and Nina or especially Lunge now that he started to realize that Johan actually existed and proceeded to "go on vacation" to find out who this guy is.

By the time the series ended, Grimmer landed himself as one of my favorite characters if not my favorite.

Bobby from Twin Peaks. He starts out as the asshole boyfriend character that's the bad boy of the town, but over time you see he's actually a good kid deep down and was manipulated. You see bits of the real Bobby over the show and how he ends up in Twin Peaks: The Return is even better.

Ben Horne was similar, but worse since youth has a lot to do with Bobby being how he was. Ben was old and experienced enough to know better, but didn't care, at least not until the latter half of the second season when he tries to do better. By the time The Return comes around, he's a changed man.

Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs.

  • Sakura Matou. I've only seen the anime so idk if this holds in the VN but in Deen and UBW, she's an absolute nothing of a character but Heaven's Feel Sakura is arguably my favorite character in the series.
  • Nadeko Sengoku. Her arc kind of sucks in Bakemonogatari but she pops the fuck off in Second Season. Also Kaiki and Ononoki. Nise didn't do a good job at introducing either of them (and Ononoki in particular basically gets a facelift the next time you see her) but they're both great characters in later parts of the show.
  • Lust from FMA2003, especially since I saw Brotherhood first where she is just a disposable henchman. Speaking of which, he was always kinda cool but Scar.
Not changing this part until Saki Amamiya (or Isa Jo) get into Smash as a playable character
Now watching: Witch Watch

Yeah, I liked as well what was done with her in the first anime. Her being made out of Scar's brother's lover was a cool concept and her "heel-face turn", if you can call it that, was nicely done.

imo zuko fits this topic even better, he seemed like a pretty generic villain/rival early on but his character development is peak
I would definitely agree with you, and I think the vast majority of fans would. One of the best redemption stories in allnof television.

Rinthy Holme from Outer Dark. She doesn't really do much but manages to show some spine and heart later in the book-- which given that book, is enough.

Jessica Mace from Laird Barron's short stories. I was not on board with her at first but liked her pretty well eventually.

Peter Washinton from Dawn of the Dead.

I was specifically responding to the opposite, initially good characters who became less good the more you saw them.

Rom from young boy playing tricks on people on the Promenade to joining Starfleet

That was Nog. Rom was his dad.
Caroline Forbes was a great pull. I hated Vampire Diaries, but her arc was the best thing about the two or three seasons I watched. And Wesley Wyndham-Price is the ultimate answer.

Carver (especially up next to Herc), Namond, Bodie, and Daniels pop to mind from The Wire.
