The modern day story is what kept me hooked on the series, until 3. After 3 it was clear they had no idea where to go
A good portion of that is because the "father" of the series left during the development of Brotherhood. Then he went to THQ to start a new historical franchise, THQ went under and Ubi bought his studio... and fired him again. He went on to create the game Ancestors: A Humankind Odyssey which is an odd title about our evolutionary ancestors survival.

I mean, did anyone like....love the modern sessions?
I think they have their defenders, but after AC3 they kinda hit a wall to the point they spun their wheels. AC3 seems to lead to something with Desmond, only to kinda shut down and completely forget its plot to the point
the big bad villain who's released with Desmond's death is literally killed on in a tie-in comic and the modern sessions just become increasingly less interesting.
I actually liked the
ideas
of the content in the RPG trilogy more than the execution, to be honest. There's a lot of interesting concepts and while I haven't finished all the DLC for Valhalla, it's probably the most lore-heavy of all of the games up to that point, and does a lot to tie together the existing lore while spot-welding its own new stuff on. Shadows didn't have any modern day outside of stuff about the Animus Hub and some anomalies with it, but with the next title they're supposed to be building more up to something else within the modern day.
