Yeah, and you notice how both of them lay perfectly flat and closed just fine as long as you don't literally cut a chunk out of the flap? Both methods have been around for ages, neither one is 'new' in any way, and both work perfectly fine. The picture I pointed out and have a problem with is the disingenuous bottom one that's straight up blaming design for getting cut open.
Besides, half the time the ones with the slot aren't perforated properly and when trying to punch it through you end up ripping the whole thing off anyway, literally turning it into the slotless version. It's also an extra step that the slotless version doesn't have to worry about, if we really wanna get into the weeds about effort here.

It's like instead of specifically cheating out on materials they just intentionally altered the packaging in whatever way would be the biggest pain in the butt regardless of whether it makes it more or less expensive.
Actually, in this case the problem is that they
did, very specifically
just cheap out on materials. They simply change the plastic formula, and run it through the same processes. They never adjusted the processes to compensate for how the new formula works. So things like perforation machines that used to work perfectly fine for the older, stiffer plastic now just stretches instead of cleanly slicing with the newer, softer formula. They can't be bothered to put in the money for sharper cutters or more sensitive heat sealers. Enshittification continues. Box-closing tabs just aren't an example of it.
