They would say it's unrealistic for the time period. In the same game with a man who controls lightning, a man who controls bees and a ghost.

It's sad how people are using that as an excuse to shit on Ghost of Yotei. Then when people called them out on it saying Tsushima ALSO wasn't realistic, I've seen at least one person try some bull like "we mean authenticity, not accuracy. And somehow the game that stars a woman is inauthentic."

Having a female protagonist in a game was considered pretty progressive and risky back then, and you did have both sides of the objectification vs empowerment debate.

You think that's crazy, I ran into someone who still insists that Sypha from Castlevania III is still a man, because the game calls her a man, the manual calls her a man. And completely ignores that Sypha's reveal as a woman in the ending and Trevor puts his arm around her if that was too ambiguous (and for the topic itself, it's exactly the same kind of 'reveal' as in Metroid).

Every game that featured Sypha Belnades since then, Sypha is unambiguously a woman.

Carrie Fernandez has the 'benefit' of being in a more obscure Castlevania game; Charlotte Aulin is way more visible than her. And I've never seen anyone object to Shanoa, but that's almost certainly because of her appearance.

This is another one of those cases where the modern wokenesses ruining muh games rage is more likely to be because of her appearance more so than her gender.

Lets say a theoretical metroid MC's face reveal leans more towards the MC of intergalactic the heretic prophet or debra wilson (someone who unfortunately gets caught in the crosshairs of the loudest and angriest of the anti-wokeness group's rage)......there would be pure, unadulterated anger here. Guaranteed.

However, if metroid MC's face reveal leans more towards the conventionally attractive. Shapely anime'ish or the usual more realistic looks that the majority goes for.

The exact same gamers that would making the most noise about this theoretical reveal going towards the more intergalactic design is the exact same group that enjoys playing sexy dress-up in games like phantasy star online 2 new genesis.

Tomb Raider as well, most likely for the same reasons, but Croft having a big chest would ameliorate it a bit.

Final Fantasy VII is, like, the ultimate woke game - the plot is about a group of freedom fighters trying to take down a megacorporation that is destroying the planet through environmentally-destructive energy production in a huge city that's the very embodiment of a capitalist dystopia. Also there's gay stuff.
