I feel like I should beat all the optional bosses, but prepping for that is such a slog.

Sephiroth is the only one to give me trouble, but overall I remember they were pretty fun boss fights

if youre somehow playing vanilla KH1 then no real need to do it other than enjoyment or if youre playing the medium difficulty and want to go for the secret ending that requires 100% journal completion (I think it may be easy difficulty)

if youre doing KH1FM then yeah each one drops Ansem Journals and is worth going for. Plus the second secret ending is very worth getting and they may be a requirement for 100% journal completion depending on your difficulty level

The optional bosses were fun. Getting the Ultima Weapon was not. When I last played the game through the collection, I ended up giving up on getting the UW since it was such a slog to get the materials for it and just focused on doing all of the other optional content. UW isnt really needed anyway since you still become extremely powerful at later levels even without it.

Sephiroth is significantly easier than anything on DMD in any DMC game. It's literally babby's first difficult boss. >_>

i probably have a chance now. back then i wasn't as smart when it came to gameplay and didn't have walkthrough guides due to no computer.

Sephiroth fight is worth doing because of how iconic it is.
You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.

Sephiroth at least looks and feels much more bearable than Mansex where the strat is basically pop Tink, mash X, and just pray.

I never got Ultima Weapon in the first game. I think the secret bosses are fun, overall Phantom can be annoying annoying if you don't like its gimmicks

Been a while, but I also remember that being effective.

When I beat Sephiroth in the OG PS2 version, I just remember dodge rolling constantly, and slowly chipping away his health during the brief openings

I always had fun with the Sephiroth fight but never really took it seriously.

last time I played was when I finally went to get Ultima Weapon. it was annoying to grind everything, and by the time I had it I was high enough level that I could brute force my way through a lot of Sephy's attacks. next time I play I'll try to beat him without it.
currently waiting for my turn in Master Duel.
For anyone who's gotten Ultima Weapon in both, was it worse in the original or Final Mix? I know they added a bunch of gimmicky Heartless in the Final Mix
Let's-a go! Okey dokey!
For super bosses, I only remember the Ice Titan since that was my preferred method to level up. Stand far away and just keep blocking his projectiles.
The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.

The process is much more tedious in FM. It used to almost nothing to get it in the original KH. There are so many new enemies you have to kill in frustratingly specific ways over and over again to complete synthesis. It was still kind of worth it, but it is no longer something I look forward to.

Im pretty sure Sephs AI changed from the PS2 version to the HD versions, for the harder. Like he uses the fire pillar a lot more, or something like that.

I feel an outlier because I love the new heartless and grinding for the Ultima Weapon in KH1FM is legitimately one of my favourite things to do.

Outside Dark Matter farming of course

Finished all the optional bosses. Unkown was actually pretty easy.

Sephiroth was a pain in the ass, but I leveled up to 90, watched a strategy video, and wiped the floor with him.

I didnt read the whole thread but I love KH1s super bosses. I think theyre fun. For Kurt Zisa you can cheese and summon Tinkerbell the second the fight starts before he magic locks you.

The Phantom fight is still, to this day, some of the most fun I've ever had in a game.

Yeah, the story goes kinda nuts pretty much the second 1 ends. Chain of Memories is honestly one of the more straightforward ones. The trick is not to think too hard about it. And I don't mean like there are plot holes that you have to overlook. I mean a significant portion of the dialog is spent as an overly intricate handwave of things that are supposed to be beyond the audience's scope of interest.

Like, instead of just saying "magic," they pull the fantasy equivalent of a Star Trek explanation, where you're supposed to go "I didn't get all that but it sounds complicated and magic-y so sure."

CoM is definitely my least preferred KH game. I've only played through it once on the collection just so that I can say I did, and by the middle of Riku's story, I was just powering through to the end.

Com was actually better on GBA in my opinion. The card system lends itself to the 2D battles a lot better than 3D. The remake just feels like youre playing a worse version of KH1 while the GBA original at least had a unique feel to it and a certain kind of charm. I still really like the sprite work in that game

I actually liked Riku's story more because I don't have to worry about building an optimal deck.
I'm not a huge fan of the combat in that game but the bosses can still be enjoyable. But CoM has the most monotonous and repetitive gameplay in the series overall (aside from the UX games I guess, since those were gacha). You just spend hours going through identically-shaped rooms and fighting Heartless.

It's a shame, because I really like the story in CoM. I think it's the most well-written game in the series.
Let's-a go! Okey dokey!
When I did a KH series playthrough in preparation for KH3, I ended up giving up on CoM after about 5 hours in because I found it painfully boring. I just ended watching a video with just the cutscenes from it to get the story of the game.
Yeah, CoM takes the filler concept to the max. Not only is the story mostly filler (actually, it might be less so than some other games in the series), but almost every room in almost every floor is so unashamedly filler gameplay-wise that they straight up let you choose which of a couple of predefined rooms you want to be on the other side of almost every door.

CoM would be way better if it cut out a few of the starting floors and gave more than one room card as a reward at the end of battle.

It feels like it drags too long at the start before it gets interesting and when it finally does get interesting you end up unnecessarily grinding because you need a Blue 8 Room card to progress and its decided you only get Green for 6 battle rewards.

it was more fun on 2D too

I dont mind it but its way too long for what it is.

It helped that it was specifically designed for 2D and I hate that they didn't keep that. ReCoM is kind of ass.

It may just be my memory but I also remember Sora appearing more op in the 2D since a lot of the sleights had better hitboxes due to the 2d

it seems the few times Ive played ReCoM that Sora misses more often than not

I never finished ReCoM. I didn't like trying to manage the deck while also having to deal with the camera and lock-on. Scrambling to find the cards I wanted was already frantic enough in CoM. Now and then I consider going back to finish it to see the new fights and Riku's new gimmick, but meh.
Hambo's alt.
Sora is supposed to be 14 in KH1? I thought he was like, 10.

Also, puberty hit hard between KH1 and CoM, Sora sounds completely different.

It's one of the drawbacks to using the same VA, yet not allowing the character to age along with.

ReCoM released 6 years after KH1.

You can imagine how a kid who sounds 10 will sound different six years later. The actor himself was about 12 (fuck dealing with days of the year, he was born in 88 and the game released in 02) when KH1 released. So he'd have been about 18 for ReCoM, lol.

KH 1 is not crazy with endgame stuff. I did Kurt Ziza , Phantom, and other stuff as a teen (original ps2 version). Seph was pretty hard but not impossible.

Much less complex than the later games

This was never an issue for me because I always 100%d the game anyway, so after getting all the synth items, I was always maxed out.

I swear, the Kingdom Hearts games are the only games where I have fun grinding

This, the secret bosses in KH2 FM are incredible.

I know it's the rage to say this nowadays, but I'd compare them to Elden Ring bosses. A bit more predictable and "scripted," but they're so satisfying to beat.
