I have an annual tradition of watching one horror movie a day in October, and this one is no different. The rules for this one are simple: For the first 21 days, I watch a horror movie I haven't seen before. For the last ten days, I cycle down my top ten horror movies of all time.
1st: The First Omen, 7/10. Felt like this movie punched above it's weight with some great cinematography, inventive scares, and a great atmosphere. The car scene in particular was excellent. Really didn't have much to expect out of this one, but it exceeded expectations. Especially for a prequel to a movie/series like The Omen. Worth a watch.
2nd: Talk to Me, 6/10. Started off strong with the cold open, the initial possession scene, and eventually plateaued on the party scene. Good allegory for drug/substance abuse. Wish I didn't hate the MC so much, Mia was godawful, and wish the movie had more bite to it. The
reversal "Let me in"
from the spirit, and the ending, were highlights to keep this afloat for me.
3rd: Oddity, 5/10. Felt misled by this movie by a considerable distance. Tailored as "A blind occultist uses her inventory of cursed objects to avenge her sister" does a lot of heavy lifting when exactly two objects are used in the entire movie, and to middling results. Really liked the MC, hated every other character. As quickly as the villain is introduced, he's revealed, and the third act fell on it's face. The
golem
accomplished nothing whatsoever, despite having a gnarly design.
4th: Cuckoo, 6/10. I actively wanted to like this movie more than I did, and the first chase scene at night is top tier. Really awesome, and reminded me of In the Mouth of Madness with the bike. Unfortunately the movie seems to embrace it's B-movie creature feature vibe more than the serious tones in the early scenes. Hunter Schafer is great in it, and Dan Stevens is hilarious with that accent, but the last act absolutely blew and the monster being a tik-tok filter of an old woman in makeup and a overcoat was /awful,/ in execution. Wish the movie was slower and creepier with a real monster. The scream and time dillation stuff was extremely promising, and didn't deliver.
5th: Bring Her Back, 8/10. This movie is absolutely brutal. Liked it a good chunk more than Talk To Me. Hated the villain so much, fantastic actress. Some of the gore scenes activated my fight or flight response. I won't stop thinking about the
knife scene
, or
auto-cannibalism
scene, for a while. Wish we had more lore on the ritual and "angelic" entity in the worldbuilding. Very, very unsettling and creepy movie. Lived up to the hype.
Tonight is Barbarian, I'll share my thoughts when I'm finished watching it.
Since only from below can one better see the heights.
