I didn't know anything was going on

it's a shock to me. He was one of the few dudes in chess who everyone liked alongside Sagar

This. I saw the news last night, and it hit pretty hard. I have been thinking about it all day; just sucks. I am not like a crazy chess person, but play a bit and have watched a ton of his videos and commentary. He just seemed like such a good-hearted, genuine person.

It feels like an innocent boy that was bullied and took his own life, and just needed someone to stand up for him, except he was a 29-year-old very successful GM.

Lost a genius:

Vladimir Kramnik has blood on his hands. Fuck him forever.

I think we all know how he died. They haven't said it publicly for respect but the way people are talking about this makes it obvious. Kramnik waged a year long harassment campaign of dragging his name through the mud when Danya grew up admiring him. Fuck Kramnik and he deserves to be sanctioned hard by FIDE.

Agreed, but it's more than that IMO. A sanction by FIDE is the minimum. He is retired, so sanctioning him won't really impact him the way it should but it should still be done. He should essentially be excommunicated from the chess world at the minimum. He is scum. But for his baseless accusation and continued toxicity, Danya would still be with us.

Last night I watched the whole 2.5 hour interview Danya did six months ago and found him to be very candid and open about what he had been dealing with. It's just clearer to me that he was a chess player first who turned to the internet to spread his love for the game. I don't believe he was ready or fit mentally for the toxic feedback he received in return from a small, but vocal amount of people, led by someone he used to trust and respect.

Kramnic got to him, the trolls that used Kramnic for attention got to him, and then I believe he spiraled and ultimately he got to himself. It's such a huge loss for his family and close friends first but also to the chess community as a whole. He was such a beacon of good that just wasn't prepared and couldn't deal with the toxicity that is also out there.

Edit: Wow so it's even worse when you know more of the details. Fuck Kramnik.

Yeah. Its chess, so it's a small kind of niche community, but the story is really very sad the more you understand the layers to it.

The better you understand who Danya was, the sadder it is.
The more you understand the drama and history between Kramnik and Danya the sadder it is.
The response from most of the key figures in chess add more sadness to it.
The response from FIDE, the chess governing body, today is absolutely infuriating. (Imagine the NCAA blaming teammates a day after the star college athlete killed themselves for not doing more to help).

FIDE has been dogshit for a very long time.
