There are estimated to be less than 10 of this species in the world.

It faces almost certain extinction due to a side effect of overfishing of another endangered species (the totoaba). That effect being getting caught in fishing nets.

Its always sad to see another species go extinct before most people even know about it.

Eel (all sushi eel) are endangered right now and if we keep eating eel the way we do, that'll happen to them too.

This includes practically any eel anyone here has ever eaten. I stopped hunting to eat eel for this reason. It's the best sushi, but not 'kill the species' level best.

Lol, my brother and I when in Japan went to a busy conveyor sushi place in Shinjuku and they had a looooooooooooot of whale sushi there. Didn't touch it though. Partially for that reason. Partially because the idea of it just felt weird too.Thankfully, sushi is still one of the few foods I have little hesitation on variety of, but still have those things I'd try if it wasn't something endangered or morally troublesome.

This is the complete opposite of my experience, it's not common for the younger generation to eat it or enjoy it. It's mostly a nostalgia thing for older generations that ate it Post-WWII when they were starving to death and it became a staple of lunch boxes. The government has to subsidize the whale fishers because demand for the meat is so low.
Can you say David Hasselhoff?

Thats weird. When I lived in Japan, my colleague told me he used to eat whale as a kid (before it got outlawed (and then un-outlawed) and he said everyone he knew thought it was bland and gross and they only ate it because one whale produces a lot of meat and because of tradition.

A lot of obscure animals do. Which is why AI fooling people sucks.

Less than 10? Probably doomed even in the best of circumstances, unfortunately.
