3. By far.

Outside of 4 and 5, however, they're all great.

1 suffers from being basic as the start of the series and thus being slightly, comparatively lacking to the sequels like the original Super Mario Bros.

X is basically a romhack of 2, and it shows. Had potential, but it's riddled with loads and loads of unpleasant bugs that often make it unplayable, and it's sometimes unbalanced as heck. Would put it below the actual 2 honestly.

I had 4 and 5 on PS2 and so I love those. My college had a Metal Slug 5 machine, so that's my favorite cause it's the one I really played. IDK why they get so much hate.

edit: I still have them on PS2, but I got the disc when it was brand new back in 2003 or 2004.

1 is my favorite to actually play.
2 is frustrating at times, and 3 drags at the end (although I get that's the "joke" ).

I remember like 4 and 5, but it's been a hot minute since I've played them.

X isn't unplayable, it runs way better than 2 does.

X is the best Metal Slug game, 3 is a close second.

Tell that to poor young D_R who got completely stuck at the arcades in the middle of blasting his way through stage 4(or maybe 5).

All enemies dead, but the screen wouldn't move. I was basically stuck in limbo with nothing to do but die by time out. Game over-ing and putting in more quarters didn't help; only made that mistake once.

That time, the owner was at least a nice enough guy to return my two quarters. Too bad for the dozen I spent getting there though!

That wasn't a single occurrence either. Happened several times afterwards. Most often on stage 2, and ONLY with X. Never with any of the others.

So, no, I'm never anointing X the best of anything. Those experiences tarnished my view of it incontrovertibly.

I'd even dare call it the worst of the whole bunch if it weren't for 4 being a phoned-in low-effort self-plagiarized mess, and 5 being an unwelcome tonal shift with an unnecessary, stupid sliding move.

maybe the self-plagiarizing thing isn't so bad in retrospect though. MvC2 is self-plagiarized 8 times over and it's a great game.

4 and 5 were the ones I had on PS2 so that's what I played and I never thought of either as shitty games, they were awesome. I never 1cc'd them but I did at least 1 3cc run of 4 or 5.

i always think of pizza places as having had metal slug machines. also casinos.

the gameboy ones that actually give you health and dared to realize they aren't arcade games meant to hoover up all the quarters out of your pockets

Anyway, the first 6 are all really good, even the first one, which feels the most pure and best paced.

3 is good because it just has so much going on. 4 and 5 have a lot of variety and spectacle. I dont remember a lot of 6, but it was good.

7 is a little weirder. Not bad, but it definitely feels different.

I've never experienced any of that in the hundreds of times I've played it.

I played it a lot on a NEO GEO MVS when I was 16/17 years old at the little arcade in the student union at the local university and never once had it freeze on me.

Exaclty, never had X freeze on me in the hundreds of times I've played it since I was a kid and especially when I was a teenager.

2 is known for horrible lag when too many enemies are on screen or too much going on.

In the arcade, I got good enough to reach stage 4 (MS3) with a single quarter.
