Is it possible for classic monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein to be scary?

Seems like this would work if there were no such thing as a vampire in mythology/pop culture already.

Like, he slowly goes from a little weird, to clearly shady, to you know he's an actual serial killer, to you see him biting his victims and drinking their blood, and slowly learn the other details of this guy.

Kinda like how Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is actually a mystery novel.

But I don't see it working at all in a world where these things have been archetypes for centuries. You'd have to be upfront about it, or when the reader gets to that point it would feel like a copout.
Oh I meant more so as a movie plot, where how he kills his victims isn't really shown up until that reveal. But that would have to be somewhere towards the middle of the movie. The audience would definitely feel cheated if the movie ends with "actually the killer survived because he was a vampire all along. The end" lol
