PARIS It turns out it would have been easier than most people realized to pull of the jewelry heist inside the Louvre Museum that netted the alleged thieves about $102 million in historic artifacts, according to an ABC News report that quoted an employee with knowledge of the worlds most visited museums video surveillance system.

As Louvre officials continue to overhaul their security protocols in the wake of the brazen theft, word has come out that the video surveillance systems password at the time of the robbery was Louvre, the report says.
Laurence des Cars, the president and director of the Louvre, told a French senate committee last month that the only video surveillance camera installed outside the Apollo Gallery was facing west and did not cover the window where the thieves used power tools to break in and exit, according to the ABC report.

Des Cars told committee members that all of the Louvres alarms worked, as did its video surveillance cameras, but noted a weakness in the museums perimeter security due to underinvestment.

The security system, as installed in the Apollo Gallery, worked perfectly, said Des Cars during his testimony, according to the ABC News report. The question that arises is how to adapt this system to a new type of attack and modus operandi that we could not have foreseen.
What Happened in the Louvre Museum Jewelry Heist?
Four people have been arrested in connection with the Louvre Museum jewelry heist and there is at least one more person connected to the robbery who remains at large, Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau said on a Franceinfo radio interview Sunday, according to the ABC News report.
The jewels have not yet been recovered, she said in the interview.
The thieves used a truck-mounted mechanical cherry picker to exit the Apollo Gallery after completing their mission, according to French investigators cited in the ABC News report. The Apollo Gallery has remained closed since the incident.
