Uhh, I appreciate TASes probably more than the average person, but why are you trying to bring it up as if it were directly comparable to a live speedrun? You didn't even mention it was a TAS.

it's iGenesis

I still don't even really understand what it means by tool-assisted. Like, what exactly are these "tools" that aid the player? What is it helping them with? I figured it's pretty much just... cheating.

Tools that let you advance the game one frame at a time so that perfect timing and button input is achieved, saving and loading savestates, pressing up and down or left and right at the same time, etc. All things that technically could be done by a player but would require such a degree of perfection (and a custom controller) that it would never happen in real life.

A TAS is not "cheating" because its purpose is different from that of a human speedrun. The point of it is not "look how awesome I am at this game," it's "what is the fastest possible time we can find to reach the end of the game." This is why earlier I said that the TAS and live speedrun were not directly comparable in the manner that iGenesis was attempting to compare them.

If you can't slam with the best, then jam with the rest.
TAS let's you see the hardcap for a specific path/strat. Nearly impossible to achieve, but depending on the game might be doable (I saw a guy get a perfect run on yoshi's board the platforms in ssb64)

I don't care about "live speedruns." I care about games being completed in the fastest possible time, which is (BIG GASP) the primary objective of a speedrun.

Well that run I just posted doesn't have anything like pressing L+R simultaneousy. It doesn't use any major tricks/exploits that can't theoretically and practically be done in real time.

The problem I see with TAS is that it's essentially the opposite of a speedrun, you're going through the game very slowly, frame-by-frame and such

I don't care about "live speedruns."

then why are you in this topic centered on live speedruns

TAS's are cool too but playing a game in segments with save states and whatnot are nowhere as indicative of skill as a live one is

watching live speedruns is like 'how the f*** can he do that is he human' whereas TAS runs are like 'I wonder how many times he had to replay this part' for me

Optimal speedruns > sub-optimal, mistake-laden slowruns done for the sake of showing "skill"

and this is exactly my point, they're not comparable because one is intended to show skill, the other to show what the optimal speed through the game is

but you're iGenesis so this conversation will go nowhere

SuperNiceDog is a vicious breed and should be banned from further Guru contests.
Is iGenesis a real person?

If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person? [HERO'S PLUNGE]

he probably IS a robot now that you mention it, which is why he is so obsessed with perfect speedruns and has no appreciation for human skill

That would also explain why he thinks each new game in a Nintendo series is automatically better than the previous ones

and yet TASes get improved all the time. shows how "optimal" they were.
