I'm seeing prices of it online for about £15, and am interested in giving it a play. I remember a lot of people really liking the game, so what would you rate it (5 being average)?

Yeah 8.5 sounds about right for me. Best Sonic game in quite a long time.

6 or 7, on a 5-is-actually-average scale

the 3D parts are still mostly bad except for a few levels, and the final boss is literally the worst thing I have played in any video game ever. 2D parts are all good except for one level. Boss battles are alright but nothing to write home about

It's definitely worth playing simply for being a good modern Sonic game.

8. I count only three really bad levels out of 18 (9 Classic and 9 Modern versions). Modern stuff is tighter than Unleashed. Classic is a bit dull by comparison but picking up some of the Shield skills will liven it up a little. Some kinda iffy selection on levels to include but still mostly good on that front. Each level has 5 challenges, some good some awful.

I'm not a fan of the level selection to be honest. I would have swapped these out:

Speed Highway for Lost World
Seaside Hill for Egg Fleet
Planet Wisp for Starlight Carnival

Dunno what the good Unleashed stages are since I couldn't bring myself to finish that game, but I'm sure the game could have done without yet another happy city level.

It's about 9 for me. After Colors and this, I think I like where Sonic games are going.

I've been watching the pokecapn LP and it's put me off buying the game. The 3D sections do not look good at all. If I could just play the 2D sections I'd be down.

Bring on Colours 2, Sonic Team.

Yeah, same here. The 3D sections don't even look...that 3D >_> they look like they play more like Sonic Colors than anything else. Which is too bad, I miss Sonic Adventures style gameplay. The game also looks pretty short.

The game is definitely on the short side, but what gameplay is there is very good. The side missions are actually pretty diverse and some of them are pretty good. Sonic games are also games that get more fun the better you get at the level, so watching someone play the game for the first time doesn't really do it justice.

It's like the difference between Mario 64/Sunshine and the Mario Galaxy games. The Galaxy games are more 2-D/3-D hybrid than Mario 64/Sunshine.

Besides, Classic and Modern Sonic still play a lot differently all the same.

What? Sure, the multiple paths and unlockables definitely give the player incentive to go back into a level and try to see everything, but that incentive doesn't make bad levels more fun. Getting to the top route in City Escape doesn't make up for the fact that I am listening to Crush 40 while playing City Escape.

Good news! You can change the music on any level!

And it's not just incentives or unlockables. Being able to speed run through levels and seeing your mistakes lessen and your total time decrease as you play is greatly satisfying.

I figured they played differently, it's just that when I think 3D Sonic my mind goes to Sonic Adventure 1/2/Heroes, not Unleashed/Colors. And I loved Colors, just...I don't know, matter of preference I guess.

Sonic Adventure/2/Heroes was rendered completely unplayable by the Hedgehog Engine.

I tried to go back and play them, but the controls are so clunky that I couldn't find myself enjoy them ever again.

I'd rather sift through the werehog crap then play anything prior to Unleashed when it comes to 3D Sonic.

The modern sections are great... once. They get really old on replay, but they're still good. The classic sections are really awesome all the time, though. It's definitely worth 15 pounds or whatever.

Also if you haven't already, you should try to get all the red rings. They take you through all the alternate areas in the levels which can be really cool.

More like play through one game where half of it is fantastic where the other game a third of it is mediocre at best.

Seriously, go play anyone of the last three Sonic's 3D stages, then go back and play an Adventure level and tell me that Adventure has better Sonic levels. Cause I love the Sonic series and I really wanted to go back and enjoy Adventure and Adventure 2, but they were easily rendered unplayable by the new style of gameplay.

Huh? Egg Dragoon isn't hard...

Last boss isn't that hard once you figure it out either but it can definitely be very irritating the first time you do it.
