Raccoons really are so damn cute. I don't want one as a pet, though.

They're very temperamental (acting like, well, wild animals) and extremely intelligent. I suppose they could be domesticated if some people with a lot of patience and time tried, but yeah, you definitely don't want even rescued raccoons as pets unless you have very particular facilities.

True domestication would take years and years through generations and generations of breeding. I read an article about fox domestication, and this farm in Siberia was working on it for 50 years. They were successfully selling them as pets eventually, but they kind of ran out of funding...

Yeah, I remember that experiment. As I recall, it was done to get a glimpse at the domestication process for dogs from wolves, and to see which features tended emerge along with that domestication. Raccoons would of course see similar changes along with a more docile temperament.
