SMT: Strange Journey was probably the best SMT game in this regard. you had a lot of control and manipulation over what came out.

Digimon World IS legitimitely hard. I think I tried playing it a year or two ago... the digimon ALWAYS needs to poop, ALwAYS! When its not asking for its asking to defecate. And then he inevitably poops on the floor and you get Numemon. The game goes against what I do as an RPG gamer , which is taking your time and thinking things through.

The game doesnt let you!

Yeah I loved DWM when I was a kid and the Shim Megami and Persona games are very very similar to me.

You gain some, you breed them, you raise some because they don't come with all their skills necessarily, and then you breed more better stronger ones to use in the fights.

yeah Monster Rancher 2 is pretty good.

there were portable potties? were there any at the beginning of the game? if there were i never saw them.

Not immediately, but the digimon to recruit to make them available for purchase were very easy to get

I'm gonna have to straight up disagree with Palmer here.

JC2's merging system is a lot closer to Pokémon's breeding system than it is to JC's merging system. I don't want you to go into it with the wrong idea and end up disappointed, so I'll lay it out for you:

-You take a powerful monster you've been raising (for the purposes of this explanation, consider it "female")
-You go into the forest and capture minions much like the original (consider them "male")
-You merge them and both disappear- gone forever, but they leave behind an egg with all the attacks and species of your female, but with all the special abilities of the male.
-Merging is the only way for your minions to get stronger and evolve so you have to sacrifice them and raise them from eggs over and over again if you want to get anywhere.

So... kind of a mix between the original's merge system and pokémon's breeding system, leaning more toward the latter.
