I got totally owned by the reality era.

When Punk went on Wrestling With Rosenberg, which by all accounts was a shoot interview, he said he just "spoke his mind", and was prepared to fight people when he went back through the curtain and stuff like that. But that guy who worked at WWE and answered questions on PWB said definitively that Punk's promo was almost totally scripted. It wasn't just "Punk says some controversial stuff", it was written. I believed what Punk said on the show, as well as in the various interviews he did, but...it's not true at all, is it. Goddamn

It doesn't make a difference to me whether it was scripted or not. It was a great promo.

Although I do have to kind of doubt that since the same guy said Punk doesn't really go by his scripts.

Oh, it doesn't change my perception of the promo, I'm just a little miffed that I was deceived even in the ~reality era~

He said Punk makes changes and has some influence in what he does, but he's still an employee so he can't just make all the decisions. It was definitely scripted, I would have thought

I just can't wrap my head around the idea that Vince would actually be like "YEAH! HAVE PUNK TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH DWAYNE KISSES MY ASS AND HOW WE'VE BEEN HOLDING HIM BACK BECAUSE THAT F***ER PAUL HEYMAN LIKED HIM! F*** YOU!"

Look Vince may not know crap about popular culture but he knows wrestler culture. Hes been freaking obsessed with it his entire adult life. He knew people like you and 13 would eat that crap up, so he did it.

On the other hand, he thought fans wanted Booker T vs. Buff Bagwell as WWE's first WCW match.

Just because it was totally scripted doesn't mean that Punk didn't have some input into the process. My guess is that Punk wrote either all or large parts of it and just had to have it approved by some WWE suit.

Yeah, Vince tends to give guys who stand up to him more leeway/independence (See: Jericho), so it's certainly reasonable that Punk got significant influence on that promo.

Given the WCW guys who had actually signed at that point, that probably WAS the biggest name match they could do.

Between that, the fact they held off on signing several big WCW names, and the fact vince probably wanted it to fail, it all makes sense.
