To me this just shows the state of gaming today when we're are overjoyed at not having to pay for a 2 player mode

Eh, this isn't really a fair way to put it.

It's a game that I don't think people expected to have a co-op mode, and thus is being added in a substantial update. What people are happy about is that it's being added for free instead of as DLC.

It'd be different if this was a fighting game or a racing game or something you'd expect 2 players in.
