Thinking about using the parts from the Exceptional tier of logical increments aside from using an RTX 2070S instead of the 2080S.

Is this reasonable?

That's a fine looking machine! Just FYI Nvidia is set to announce their next generation cards any day now, which may have an effect on GPU prices. Might want to keep that in mind.

Yeah I think I'm in the market for a 2070S come black friday sales. Had to underclock my 970 due to some crashing issues.

I will say that the price for power on the 3070 is legitimately bananas. If you're comfortable with that price point, it's worth it.

As two caveats: it's hard to say exactly how much the 2070s will drop AND it's also hard to say whether getting any of these new cards is even going to be possible for a little while since these things typically sell out ludicrously fast.

I was honestly expecting a bit of an increase for the MSRP of the 3070 but they matched the 2070S.

But yeah, availability is going to be the only thing potentially holding you back.

Personally I'd double the size of the SSD and skip the HDD, especially since games requiring SSDs are becoming a thing and will probably be the norm from next year on, due to the PS5 and XSX releases.

They are. Nobody knows when exactly they're going live though, and once they do these things are going to be instantly out of stock probably into next year, lol.

For now it's fine though since the cards most people really want are the manufacturer cards that tweak Nvidia's designs, which will probably be detailed through the rest of this month.

I was actually considering getting just the SSD for now and ordering another SSD down the line. Does that make sense, or should I just get a bigger SSD now?

I mean, if it were me, I'd go all out and buy a 2TB SSD (and am planning on doing this later this year <_<), but I'd definitely at least go for a 1TB, since that's not a huge price increase over the 500GB ones.

So it turns out there's been a PSU shortage this year due to coronavirus disrupting supply chains and a lot of the components being made in China.

The PSU I was planning to get is the Corsair HX850-- not sure if I should just wait and hope it's back in stock this month or just try for something else.

6 a.m. PT tomorrow for the founders cards, no solid word on the manufacturer cards but I'm personally betting it'll be around the same time.

Pretty much everywhere will have them - Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, random ass tech sites, etc. (How long they'll stay in stock is a very different matter, of course)

I would definitely not purchase this PC until BF. The 3070 should also be able to be bought by then reliably. Definitely would save a good bit of money by just waiting the 2 months or so.

Also, your PSU is pretty overkill for your unit unless you plan to dualfire or something.

It's unclear whether there will be any stock by BF given there are supply chain issues caused by COVID

Also I'm taking time off in October for the express purpose of playing games and would like my PC built and any needed troubleshooting finished by then

PSU is probably overkill but I'm mostly just going with something that has a lot of headroom because (from what I've read) PSUs tend to be more efficient when max load is decently below the PSU's rated wattage

No dice on my end, either - everywhere sold out in seconds while also crashing constantly. Amazon seems to be the only big hope remaining for a day one, but I'm sure those will go just as quickly.
