Vee 5-11 McGonagle

Dameon Clarke might have been some pretty heavy competition for Nolan North, but he ended up winning with a bit of daylight between them. McGonagle pulls a seeding upset by beating Cristina Vee, setting up an interesting all-Uncharted quarterfinal. Will McGonagle resist heavy SFF? Meanwhile, a match that many may have considered the true final between Hayter and McLain ended on a relative damp squib with Hayter jumping out to a huge lead that McLain never recovered from. With that said, it took 17 votes to beat her across two days, so she is, as you would expect, one of the strongest competitors in the bracket.

I can already see one or two good bonus matches to run when the contest is over!

Ugh, I voted for all three losers. I had Handsome Jack winning the bracket and GlaDOS in the final four.

North SFFs McGonagle to death. I thought, given how popular Sully is, there was a chance of some kind of rSFF deal here, but I guess not. North's resistance to that is a good omen heading into an epic semi-final with David Hayter.

Hamill 8-11 Shimerman

Even though Shimerman was seeded and Hamill wasn't, to me this has to go down as a slight upset. Hamill beat everyone else - except Lori Alan - with such authority that making the final felt like a lock, but hey ho.

And now it's time for the semi-final showdown

Tiebreaker RESULT

Hayter 18-17 Shimerman

Hayter takes it, 33-32 overall. Outstanding final, Shimerman coming up just short. Clearly a lot more of a beloved performance than I had ever previously considered, he came so close to knocking off the bracket favourite. But Hayter takes a somewhat predictable - though not undeserved - tournament victory.

I'll run this again next year. It was great! Maybe a bigger bracket, a different format, and definitely some of the best performers from this bracket auto-in and seeded.

I'm surprised by this. I never really thought Hayter's performance as Snake was particularly special, and certainly not among the 64 greatest in VG history.
