Only Game in Top 10 Without a #1 Vote
The return of this classic series was well loved by ballot voters. The stylish design and fluid combat propelled this game here. To be honest I never thought a 2D Beat em up would ever crack the top 10 so this is pretty wild to see!

Infamous 2 finished 11th in 2011
Infamous Second Son finished 7th in 2015

The epic samurai classic intended to close out the PS4 system was well received by voters. 2020 was a wacky year and by the time this came out a lot of lockdowns had ended meaning the first half of the year attention on gaming had worn off. Still its another extremely solid Sucker Punch showing.

Uncharted 3 finished 11th in 2011
The Last of Us finished 3rd in 2013
Uncharted 4 finished 12th in 2016

Uncharted has always done well but not good enough to make the dance but Last of Us 1 was really loved back in 2013. There is definite love here for the sequel but unlike 2013 it didn't dominate the top of lists, in fact it mostly got here with 2nd place and 3rd place votes. Another fun factoid is the game was 10th for unique lists appearing on, so those that voted for it really did love it.

#7 Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout PC/PS4
1 First Place Vote

Releasing this for free on PS plus was a brilliant move to get people playing this game. It was the first big craze in the back half of the year and had a 2 year old game (Among Us) not suddenly dethrone it...this could have done even better. Fall Guys appeared on the second most lists of all games that got votes, that is incredible penetration. They just couldn't keep the magic lasting after the first two months.

TLOU2 is one case where spoilers actually did prevent me from being excited to play the game.

I'll probably still play it some day, but before the spoilers came out I was probably going to pre-order/Day One purchase it

Couple issues hit Royal. The first was its the super version of a game that a lot of people played in full already. Many aren't willing to replay a 100 hr rpg. The other was that it came out right at the start of the US lockdown and kinda got buried. Still the rpg die hards sought out Royal and those that played it really did like it...but something a bit more recent edged it out

As the Yakuza Series has risen thru the goty ballots it also has spread its wings becoming a multiplatform franchise and this has been a positive thing. Xbox users have embraced the series and they are a big reason this game finishes so damn high. Yakuza has gone from cult classic to powerhouse in under a decade.

Ori and the Blind Forest finished 13th in 2015

While the first game was a cult sleeper this was a highly anticipated sequel. Taking the great concepts of the first game and really pushing the metroidvania polish to perfection. Ori was 8th for list appearances but 2nd for first place votes showing that those that voted for it had it really really high up.

Animal Crossing New Leaf finished 6th in 2013

If 2020 went a different way I think this game would have came and went. But it became the center piece of social media for a few months and made it on a ton of lists, 3rd most overall. But...few people listed it high. New Horizons ended up scoring the most 8th 9th and 10th place rankings of all games and still reached this spot. Had it overall scored on the high end across the board it would have won.

I have never seen a clear cut winner like this. Whether it was the lockdown helping it release at the perfect time or the game just living up to its own hype. Considering this is only part 1 of 5 billion of this retelling, it makes a future scary contender

The margin of victory was 75 points over Hades which beats the previous largest of 20 (Botw over Persona 5).
