There were a dozen "check out this cool link!" sites, like Digg and StumbleUpon and LUELinks. reddit won because the top links were pretty good and the comment section was always even better... because the funniest comment was always bubbled to the top.
That's really all there was to it. 99% of users just wanted to see the link plus get a laugh out of two or three comments on the subject, and reddit delivered that in 10 seconds without having to search or scroll. They found the secret sauce and have never had to update or improve anything to stay #1.
