There's nothing really wrong with that sequence. It's overblown, but it fits right in with the fact that (even from the source) The Hobbit is supposed to be more child friendly than TLotR.The Hobbit has an anecdote about how golf was invented when a goblins head got knocked off into a hole, its supposed to be silly.
