For a one in a billion chance to be set for life sure why not
Some of my friends wanted to so I said for $2, yea alright whatever
You were the cancer, that's all you'll ever be
I really messed up this contest, but azuarc gave it a Breath of fresh air
It's actually to much.

I live in a state where they announcer the winner so my name would be all over the newspapers.

I don't want the constant harassment that would come with winning this.

It's enough for me to buy a ticket to spend a few minutes thinking about "well, what if..." and get some minor entertainment value out of it.
With that kind of money you could just move elsewhere easily even in the insane housing market right now. You could pretty much live anywhere on the planet including buying your own island
Lottery winners are statistically less happy than people who dont win.

Im good

Would it be constant harassment? subtract the family members, loved ones and friends that you'd probably want to help. Do you think it would be that many people showing up with their hand out?

Yay?

I like living near my friends and family and would rather not have to move out of the state to escape from hordes of people coming for my money. Would probably lose some friends as well since that kind of wealth changes relationships.

And some of the grifters/sales people would probably still be following me anywhere in the country.

You are forgetting all the people looking to sell you stuff, be your new accountant/lawyer/stock broker/etc, college and high school who you just became their biggest alumni to ask for money, charities looking for donations, plus scam artists.

You're right, i wasn't thinking about any of those possibilities... Doesn't sounds great but that lump sum still opens up new doors that may not have existed before.

Also, yes, this. Actually winning the oversized prize would suck more than anything.

Buying a ticket and thinking about what you'd do with fuck you money in an ideal world is the entertainment value itself, and there does reach a point where that number becomes big enough that it's worth two bucks.
I don't see how you could be unhappy getting to live everyday exactly how you want to.

As long as you aren't stupid with your money (which apparently most big winners are)

Imagine every person you have ever met in your entire life calling you asking for money tirelessly for the rest of your life, and getting mad at you if you don't give them any.

Then you run out of money and all of those people don't believe you and continue to pester you accusing you of hiding money you just don't want to give it to them

And then your daughter dies of a drug overdose when she got addicted to cocaine because it was offered to her at parties because she had so much money*

I could give every person I know at least 1 million and still be fine lol

There are some obvious headaches with having that much money but shit if I could give away like 80-90% of that and just have enough for myself to live without anxiety for the rest of my life I'd be cool with that

Why do people think there is a better chance of winning the higher the pot?

This is the incorrect logic.

I recognize my chance is just as low as it would always be. But now the potential reward is much more. The better questions i why you would play the terrible odds when the prize is 100x smaller instead of ONLY playing it when it crosses 1B.

yeah when you're just as likely to lose as always but the pot goes up, then the value of a ticket goes up

In theory, but the value of money is subjective and has greatly diminishing returns for most people at the point where these numbers are. If I had a choice between a $1B lottery and one that had double the odds and only paid out $20M I would take the latter in a heartbeat.

Right, but that's not the choice here. Our odds for this type of lottery is exactly the same no matter when we happen to play it.

And for the one with double the odds I'm sure you'd rather play it when it's worth 20M instead of when it's worth 2M

With sky-high inflation, isn't the cost technically way less than $2 because those $2 are worth less now?

well remember, lump sum drops its to 600million. then take out the governments share of roughly 55%. that leaves you with less than 300million.

It's weird that they advertise the pretax jackpot. In Canada, if you win $10 million you get $10 million.

US states all have different tax rates so that makes it kinda hard to advertise the after-taxes amount. Also, lower income people might be taxed slightly less? Not 100% sure how that works.

Gambling tax is the same rate for everyone.

It's partly the state tax differences but also I'm sure it's because larger numbers are more psychologically enticing.

With that much money you can find a quiet place of land and enough supplies to live out the rest of your life without having to deal with human civilization. If no one can find you, no one will harass you.
At least that is what I would do if I had a billion dollars.
