Who is the villain?

Ive seen so many arguments, lets lay them all here
I live on, THROUGH THIS SEASHELL!

Seymour is the primary antagonist. Jecht is sort of a tragic hero if anything. It's hard for me to consider Sin or Yu Yevon the main villains when they have no real personality to speak of.

I think 'the Cycle' is the real answer here. Everything that happens in the game is a result of the cycle Yu Yevon set up, but Yu Yevon is basically dead already so I'll go with the more systemic angle.
It's Reyn Time.
Sin and the cycle are just a force of nature though, they aren't really actively bad guys. Seymour is probably the answer here since he's the most antagonistic.

Seymour also tried to merge with sin and actively destroy everything, that could very easily have been the final boss instead of braska's final aeon and I think is probably more important for the setting's health, seymour controlling sin is probably worse than just letting sin's cycle continue as is. So I'm going to say seymour.

It's hard for me to say yu yevon is the villain despite him creating the cycle, because the reason he did that was to defeat a nation he was at war with.

It's hard for me to really say any of the beings are. I think the Cycle is the only answer that makes sense. Sure, there are lots of antagonists, but they're all so tragic and trapped and have no real agency. They're just kind of caught up in the SPIRAL OF DEATH GET IT IT'S SPIRA. Anyway Seymour is the closest as he is actively trying to change fate but he also, like, doesn't matter, and he's more of a personified representation of the pain of the cycle

just kidding it's the fucking birds
Kneel... or you will be knelt
Yu Yevon is the most literal answer in the ultimate sense.

Seymour is the primary antagonist in the sense that he drives the actions of the heroes and the plot somehow even more than the Pilgrimage does at times but he's also such a loser that he deserved to get owned before the final boss

getting the emotional payoff with Jecht at the end was better than some lame final showdown with Seymour (even if it does have great boss music)

Yuna for wasting my time with her bullshit
"It is too easy being monsters. Let us try to be human." ~Victor Frankenstein, Penny Dreadful
The cycle & Yu Yevon are what need to be defeated, but they aren't concious. Yunalesca is the only active conscious supporter of the cycle (and her cronies like Mika), so it's clear she's the ultimate villain. Not only of Tidus/Yuna's story, but Auron's, and every summoner. Defeating her was the climax of the party's mission (aka "our story") and killing Sin was the end. Then only Tidus' story to beat Jecht remained.

Seymour actually wants to the end the cycle just as much as Tidus/Yuna, but using destruction instead. He was absolutely a loser who did not deserve to be the final boss. Glad they didn't do that.

he says listen to my story this maybe are last chance
WELL I mean ideally he would have been a character with actual presence befitting that, I get why the Seymour we have got shafted

No lightning?

There's the trick of that one crater that triggers a lightning bolt when you walk into it, so you can just abuse that to get the 200.

There is no trick against the birds.

real answer is yu yevon/church/cycle as others have pointed out

Can't wait to play the version of FFX where Sin is a mecha used by the Luca Goers and all the events of the game are a gigantic conspiracy to ensure their continued unrivaled blitzball dominance.
I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways.

The grand championship is played inside Sin, and Tidus invents the Tidus Shot Mark IV in front of Jecht just to spite him

The X-3 we would get based off of the radio drama is something that should never see the light of day

Seymour is the villain of the story but it is not a story primarily about overcoming a villain. And that's okay.

So I agree with the general sentiment in this topic but general sentiment isn't answering the question.
No problem!
This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
the villain is Tidus

Spiras got a good thing going, a system that works, and he comes along and Fuchs it all up.

In that sense the real villain is Auron because he's the one who puts everything into motion and makes it all happen

If you are being literal with "the villain" or "the antagonist" in that they have to be characters, then it's Sin. But really this question misses the central conflict of FFX which is against power structures and The Cycle.

Sin physically embodies the cycle so that's the closest. No, it doesn't have much of a personality and is more of a force of nature, but that's not an argument against it being a character. You could apply this to like, Godzilla, you wouldn't say Godzilla isn't a character.

Seymour is doing a similar thing by personifying the Church, Jecht is the source of so many of Tidus's issues, but Sin and the Cycle are bigger than them and ends up literally assimilating these other things.
I definitely did not forget to put the 2020 GOTD Guru winner, azuarc in my sig!
