I feel like its been a while since Ive seen these games discussed

I feel like World is definitely way more popular but honestly I like 3s charm more, maybe its because of the simpler hardware that makes me appreciate it quite a bit. Or maybe its the hammer bros suit.

Level design in 3 continues to be the blueprint for excellent 2d platforming.

World is great but a lot of space feels dead or lacking purpose.

I agree with this

I basically love everything about SMB3 way more than SMW, obviously a lot of it comes down to personal preference but it's just not even close for me, I never loved SMW like I love SMB3

I think SMW has better movement/jump physics but the SMB3 level design is better.

SMB3 is so good it's not really fair. 2D Mario never recovered after peaking so hard.

It's been kind of wild to watch the gradual shift from Mario 3 to Mario World being the preferred game of the two over my time here.

I love both but red basically nailed why 3 is the better game to me.

I've always been a World guy but thought both were great.

After replaying both recently, I still think World is great but dropped 3 without finishing. That's actually been the case the last few times I've tried replaying it. 3 was obviously great for it's time and I used to like it, but I feel like it doesn't hold up as well as World.

I deeply hate the way Mario's hat lifts off his head when he jumps in SMW, so SMB3 wins

I also think SMB3 is a better-designed game, but that first point alone is enough to rank SMW lower for me

SMB3 seems better (in terms of level design and power-ups), but SMW gives me better feelings. Actually, one advantage SMW has is "secrets", which is quite a big deal. And Yoshi is a big deal, too, even if he kind of breaks the game. SMW, it is.
"Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So... what is a party?"
"You drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think."

3 levels are too short.

World.
Last finished: Xevious (7800) (Intermediate), Threshold (2600), Sub Scan (2600), Stargunner (2600), River Raid (2600), Megamania (2600).

cape flight is a fun rhythm mini-game. I still prefer SMB3, but it used to be by a wide margin. Now it's more like, 97/100 vs 96/100.
azuarc wasn't even home. he was playing Magic the Gathering at his buddy's store, which is extremely easy to verify

I prefer World. Both are top 20, probably top 10 games of all time and the absolute peak of 2d platforming.

I would say SMB3 was better. World's levels were more complex, more challenging but, rather in an unfair way.

Back when it was new i'm sure 3 was amazing. But World did pretty much everything better.

I think World still, though it's gotten closer between the two as I've gotten older. I prefer 3's physics and controls but World's levels and general design, which seems to be the exact opposite of the common opinion here lol

Maybe hot take but I think I'd also put SMB1 in this conversation.
Congrats to BKSheikah , who knows more about years than anyone else.

World's level design is fantastic if you enjoy the thrill of finding new things and how unlocking things can change a level. Everything in World revolves around its secrets.

In terms of pure platforming excellence, 3 is hard to beat.

3 has better design

World has better physics

Choose one.
