Review scores are very similar to the first game, but at the same time almost all the reviewers seem to believe it's an improvement (whether incremental or significantly better).

Decided to start my playthrough with Thron. So far the voice acting seems better than Triangle Strategy. Or at the very least the characters I'm with first are.

This battle theme is great.

Also it's pretty funny to ambush people for no reason. Just walking through an active casino with a bunch of unconscious people for no reason.

Very interested in this game especially because I'm hearing that it solves basically all of my problems with the original. Won't be playing it for a while though because I'm just coming off another JRPG right now (Trails in the Sky SC, woo) and I can only finish one of these things before needing to cool down for a month or two with a blitz of shorter games - of which there are a bajesusload coming out right now!

Choosing Agnes as my starting main character like I chose Primrose in OT1

Dancer job ftw

Also, I like the Battle Theme more than in OT1. But Decisive Battle 2 in OT1 is still my top favorite.

I'm actually pretty let down by the OST so far. There's a couple 7/10s, but Octo 1 had like 5 songs that were 9/10 or higher for me so the bar was set really high.

So comparing to other games, yeah it's still pretty good music, but at least at the moment, the ost doesn't hold a candle to octo 1's

same. just like the first game there's an issue with overleveling. However, if this is like its predecessor it won't matter too much and the game will still be challenging. Still we're at the point where I think every game should have a zeroXP option or a turn off battles mode to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

anyway, I'm guessing that a lot of people will be upset that this game is basically exactly like the first one (day /night cycle notwithstanding). as someone who really really likes the first one I have no issues personally but I get it.

Can't lie, I wish some of these sprites didn't look so dumb.

Hikari as a Hunter, great subjob but I hate the sprite.

I went ahead and unlocked Armsmaster when I was only level 30 and broke the game.

Especially when combined with Warrior's ability to damage beyond 9,999.

For the first time in either game, I got Bewildering Grace to give me exp x100.

having played a few of the "crossed paths" I feel like people complaining about "no party interaction" have no real leg to stand on.

feels like it's very clearly and obviously building toward an overarching narrative, so I'm really surprised a lot of the reviews still complained about this

I mean the Crossed Paths stuff is only 2 chapters and there's only one pairing for each character.

The big thing most people who complain about lack of party interactions don't like is that other party members just disappear from all main story cutscenes. Crossed Paths don't "fix" that. And I use quotations because it's not something that inherently needs to be fixed, but that doesn't change that it's still a sticking point for many people.
Change is weird.

Just started it. Went with Castti and I can already tell the writing is much better. I'm going to be using Inquire on every character I can.

I adored the graphics in the first and these are even better.

hit a pretty gnarly difficulty spike with partitio's chapter 3 boss. but also I'm basically 10 levels below the suggested level cap so I guess it's my fault.

This is absolutely several steps above the original. The Latent Powers are basically Limits and I freaking love them, especially in conjuction with the BP system.

This is the best game design I've seen in a JRPG

- The ability to adjust game speed
- Variable cutscene/style
- Incredibly stylish special moves that are fun to use
- Healing after level up, encourages battling
- Great Day-Night implementation
- Money is not a concern in early game
- And of course the art style

This might end up being my GotY if it keeps up this level of quality.

I mean you can only go from 1x to 2x.

What's funny is that the idle animations look a lot better at 2x, but the trade-off is that the actual attacks go way too fast. Which is fine when you're grinding but kinda sucks during boss battles.

Also just finished Throne's path and man, that last chapter is something (and kinda outta nowhere). I hope whatever final chapter there is kinda explains it because otherwise the whole idea of some immortal dude putting together a gang of thieves so that the strongest one would come back and kill him is super left-field.

Yeah so the stories are all noticeably improved over Octopath 1's. For me Cyrus and Primrose had memorable storylines but not really anybody else. Everybody this time around is fairly memorable, if not a bit grimdark, except for Agnea obvs

Finished all the stories and crossed paths, now I'm just doing side quests until I decide it's time to do whatever the endgame is. Really enjoying the game so far.

Also want to say that I got an exp x 100 after I killed a King Octopuff, so that whole party ended up like 17 levels ahead of everyone else so they're benched now while I level the others.
It's tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.

argh i hate how overleveled I am now, just going through the last stories. Things were fine when Hikari was at level 50 and everyone else was 40, but now I have four stories to go and they're all ten levels higher, no grinding/xp boost strats enabled.

several of these final story bosses have been ruined because my max Brandt's blade basically one shots them. and I guess I could just not do that but it feels weird to not do the META. I didn't even get to hear Temenos's awesome final boss theme cause the boss died too quick.

Man, I'm on the final chapters and massively underleveled. There's no way you've done zero grinding and your characters are overleveled.

I had Osvald's extra experience skill on to get people from level 25-30 so I could beat Partitio's level 3 boss

but from levels 30 - 50 zero grinding- I did luck into some natural cait's/octopuffs. and I've been doing the side dungeons (but I don't consider that grinding).

Doing the style where I use a crew of four to do the first four characters to the end, then switching to the other four. Finished Throne, Agnea, Castti, and Osvald currently, so I finally switched to my other team. Their levels are very low (lower than the L15 suggested for most of the chapter 2s), but final chapter weaponry makes it easy anyway!

Would rank the stories Castti > Agnea > Throne > Osvald, I think? They were all very good, but I wasn't a huge fan of Osvald's villain. I could say the same about Castti's, I guess, but I loved the moment of her curing the purple rain at the end a lot, so it worked out okay. Agnea's story being less violent was awesome, and Dolcinaea was a fantastic final boss - such a good design and climax! Throne was just very good all around, I might be underrating her here. Father's background story too good. The stuff at the end was a bit out of nowhere, but it was also good, so I was happy with it.

Question: I've seen people mention a boat . Should I have that by now? Did I just miss it somehow?

Given that you haven't been using Partitio no, you wouldn't have it. You should be able to find it pretty easily.
