I grew up with a Genesis and I wouldn't take it over NES, or much of anything.

Having thought about it, my guess for the 9 strongest systems goes:

SNES
PS1
PS2
N64
Switch
GB
NES
GC
DS

With the GBA, Wii, PS3 and PS4 lurking on the periphery. PC is a wildcard.

I would resist the urge to balance this list out with non-Nintendo systems - the Genesis and 360 are not gonna have the juice. Nintendo systems have by far the strongest legacies, especially on GameFAQs, and they're gonna dominate the entire scene - only the PS1 and PS2 are big boys compared to the Nintendo stuff. PS3 onwards lack the lasting brand power to be better than a midcarder imo.

Wii definitely doesnt make it. Look at any Nintendo system poll, its closer to the Wii U than the next strongest system. The 360 bests it for sure. The NES also does not do particularly well and 80s nostalgia is not nearly as powerful here as 90s/early 00s nostalgia.

I would guess (not counting PC):

Game Boy
Genesis/Mega Drive
SNES
PS1
N64
PS2
Gamecube
PS4
Switch

Dont underestimate the PS4. It nearly beat the PS1 in a 2018 poll - I think the PS4 is much closer to the PS1 than that is to the PS2. The hard part is figuring out handhelds. I think the DS is being massively overrated here, it bombed in every System of the Year poll it had despite massive ownership. By contrast the 3DS did quite well, helped by the weakness of the Wii U Im sure but it actually managed to win one year. Absolutely 3DS>DS, and I think it beats the GBA as well. This is just not a very handheld-focused place. I have Game Boy on there purely due to legacy but the 3DS beats everything after it. The other issue the DS has is that like the Wii its still viewed as part of that casual Nintendo era, which obviously was always absurd but I dont think people here ever came around on that era.

I forgot to mention 3ds when I did my post, brainfart, but yeah it should be up there as well, possibly over ds

But I am hesitant to read into system of the year polls or any other polls that have put systems against each other because the framing of "best console ever" changes the game so much - mark my words, NES gets a boost from this just from respect value alone

I think I might very well be underestimating the PS4 but I stand firm in my belief that the PS3/360 are dead ducks

Playstation 5 ain't there yet.

GameCube is going to have your weakest Mario/Zelda combo here besides probably your handhelds. Melee is huge though, but the system was clearly dominated from its era and I don't know that nostalgia will save it here.

Wii once deserved a space, but after SSBB and MK8 in 2008 it just never found its momentum again.

Game Boy/Advance aren't anywhere near the same pedigree or library as the S/NES.

Genesis is just too far in Sega's rearview mirror as a former console maker. Sega's still alright today, but they haven't made a system in twenty-four years. That legacy has diminished.

360 saw Microsoft poison the Xbox brand here a decade ago and it never recovered. That whole generation was pretty even with 360 probably being the close overall winner at that time, but then the company went overboard.

Steam Deck might cheat its way up here, but it wouldn't be because of the device.

I'd make the argument for PS1 over PS2 on gamefaqs just because of HOW foundational the PS1 is to this site, but the PS2's library is just so strong that I don't know how confident I am.

I feel pretty good that the PS2 beats the PS1 head-to-head, but their indirect strength may not be that far apart.

I'm disappointed that we didn't get a console contest when people were first talking about it 10-15 years ago when I was one of the only ones willing to take N64 > PS1. I figure that would be the favorite now.

The pics are why I would never think about PS1 > PS2. Yeah, it starts good with the FFVII vs. FFX staredown, but if there's eight games being cycled through like there was in the Years contest, the PS1 is going to have a quick drop off since you know Allen isn't going to have 7, 8, 9, and Tactics represented on the same round, and that's what the PS1 would need to look good.

I dont see how you dont have the Switch or the Game Boy on that list. PS5 is a good console so far but should be nowhere near it. Really I think it looks more like:

Why would the PS5 sell less than the PS4? It's almost caught up despite the shortages, and it'll be longer before the PS6 comes out than the PS4 had before the PS5.

It was leaked in the FTC stuff that the PS6 won't be out until 2028 or later.

The other part was announced by Sony in April.

The reason the gap narrowed was a huge quarterly shipment due to the end of the shortages, nobody thinks those numbers will be sustainable. We are also now approaching the point in the PS4s life where the revisions launched and it kept its sales momentum unusually long as a result.

Either way, what we can agree is that the PS4 sold faster in its first two and a half years despite doing significantly less new than the PS5.

The only thing significant about the PS4 is that its not the Xbox One.

Im open to another fifth console, and the more I think about it, it probably should be the Switch.
