Now that SB is departing as Site Administrator, some of us have been doom and gloom about the death of GameFAQs -- and I get that, really. That said, what moves do you think a new admin here should take for the future of GameFAQs? In a different SB-topic, we talked a lot about what could have been done in the past...but what about now? If you had to save GameFAQs starting today, what needs to be done?

It's easy to say contests -- so I will, more contests -- but beyond that?

I'll start with this: GameFAQs has almost no social media presence, and in 2023 I think that matters. Compare its Facebook and Twitter presence to GameSpot, IGN, major streamers...and recognize most of them will also be on sites GameFAQs does not even have have an account for. People gotta hear about us if people are going to come to us.

What else?

I don't think there is much that can be done now tbh. More social media presence sounds nice but would people actually care? Don't think they will. Pretty sure all that keeps us alive is people wanting to actually see text based faqs, and eventually that may disappear but for older games that's our bread and butter

Social media presence is a big one. That is an obvious way forward.

Honestly of course Im saying this here, but more contests would help, those do draw people and are very much a unique GameFAQs thing still.

Lastly, tidying up the reputation of the forums. Which probably means a lot more active moderators.

GameFAQs is still a useful resource of text-based guides, Ive used it recently in fact. The website doesnt need to just wither and die.
I just decided to change this sig.

Never say never, but I think we're on borrowed time even if new management has good ideas. And if they DO have good ideas, I think they'll kinda need to be the type that would alienate those of us that are still here.

Step 1 would be don't scare away the users who are already here. So don't do any of the stuff that people have repeatedly been opposed to over the past decade+.

Honestly, they might have to try some kind of gamble. If it attracts new people to the site, great! If it doesn't... well it was nice knowing you.

Expecting that the site will always exist as a niche text guide archive for older games that may not have their own Fandom Wiki, but the message boards might not be around all that much longer. It would be very low maintenance to have only the FAQs.

RIP Bob Barker (1923 - 2023) - and thanks for all the memories.
I'd love to see more contests but it's also sad to see matches struggle to get 20,000 votes now. That's also part of why I don't run board contests anymore. It's hard to feel as excited about 25 votes per day when you could get 2-4 times that back in the day.

We need a solid merger/partnership that actually leverages the FAQ portion of the site which is oddly really useful in todays internet where most game info is a clunky mess to find.
You mean like with Gamespot or somethi-- oh wait.

I'm always surprised when people say the site is dead/dying because every time I google anything regarding a game, I almost always get directed to GameFAQs and find the answer rather easily. Not so much the walkthroughs, though - it's mostly the Answers and the archived message board topics. Text walkthroughs are more difficult to justify these days, unless it's for keeping track of collected items and the like. I'd venture to say the issue is more in building loyalty towards the site and users actually wanting to be part of the community outside of having their specific question resolved.

Just testing Surskit's experience there a little, I tried Googling a few games. In general, searching for "[GAME] FAQ" or "[GAME] Answers" gets GameFAQs at the top. However, if I'm looking for something specific about the games like a certain world, list of things about the game, or how to find its collectables...always went somewhere else first for the top results.

The problem with Gamespot is they never acted like we were actually merged. We really could have been leveraged in all their articles and stuff at the time. Just a simple tagline with a link for all their stuff. But we were never really integrated. At some point it looked like the only thing they really wanted to merge was the forums and that was uhhh...quite a disaster to say the least.
