Should I play Octopath Traveler II without playing the first?

I decided to impulse purchase it but I haven't played the first one, and I know the game is standalone but I didn't really think to ask if it matters at all to play the first. Keep in mind this is for someone who doesn't want to play every RPG in the world - if the second game just outclasses the first and will make me never want to revisit the first, that's perfectly fine, I'm not the type of person who wants to play them in order of quality starting with the shittier one.
Having not played the second game my understanding is that the second stands on its own and is better in every way, so I voted that you should just play that. To be clear the first game is still really good! All it is is that it has some specific issues that are off-putting to some that I think the sequel addresses.
I just decided to change this sig.
Blaaaaaaargh azuarc
Skip both and play LIVE-A-LIVE instead imo

but if you must, the plots arent related at all so you can just play 2

They are completely unrelated plot wise. And yes, 2 is better in every way.
As a fan of the first game, I voted the first option in the poll. 2 is a big improvement on the first, and the things I like about the first game aren't really something who's not a huge JRPG fan would be into as much.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
Yes, but you should make sure you play Octodad first.

The second game is a marginal improvement in basically every regard, but the gap isn't significant and they're not connected at all, so playing in either order is fine.
So a planet's somewhere out there, their history the same as ours is written. The only difference is that... Everyone's a kitten!
