Battle usage affects it too, particularly synergy abilities.

Yeah, it does, particularly the first time Cloud uses a synergy ability with someone. The game notifies you when your affection rating changes (either up or down), so you'll know what impacts it.

Which would probably help explain how I ended up with Yuffie because she became part of my go-to party.

Barret might have ended up as my #2 for the same reason.

Using synergies for the first time are the only things that contribute to affection. Using them a lot in battle makes no difference.

Shogun Episode 1 complete!

This was my wife's suggestion. Her brother recently binged the show and told her about it. She's a history buff and is interested in the history of Japan in particular, so she wanted to watch it.

Pretty good first episode! So many spinning plates already, it's hard to tell who's doing what quite yet. Definitely intrigued to see where it all goes though.

I am the Queen's Blood champion. The last couple of matches were pretty entertaining! After completing all of this and spending a good bit of time on the card game, I'd say that it's a top tier mini-game for the series. I'd still put it behind Triple Triad as far as card games go, but there's no shame in that.

So hypothetically if I was thinking about playing Xenoblade 3, would it matter if I'd finished Xenoblade 2 or played the Torna DLC?

I fully expect to be disappointed by the story (at least by the end) either way, but am also in a gaming mode where I don't know if that will matter.
I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways.

I would personally recommend finishing Xenoblade 2 but would you have to? No, I suppose not. I'd maybe compare it to skipping Trails in the Sky the 3rd. It's not the "lol no" that would be skipping FC to jump into SC, but some things in Zero would not land as hard if you did skip 3rd... but you wouldn't really be lost in Zero.

Though really I'd also say Torna is miles better than Base XB2 and would be worth playing but you could absolutely skip Torna if your intent was to play XB3.

Triple Triad without a guide is kinda frustrating. The whole optimal abolishing of rules and save scumming puts it behind queen's blood for me. But the fact cards have more uses thanks to GF skills was neat.

Yeah all I was asking is if I'd be confused.

The hard sci-fi aspects of Xenoblade have universally been a complete flop for me, so I'm sort of assuming that anything depending on the remaining Xenoblade 2 content* would not land well for me even with proper context. I also already have a vague understanding of what the Xenoblade 2 ending is about and what the general plot of 3 is.

*This does not necessarily apply to Torna, but my impression before asking was that Torna only really mattered within Xenoblade 2.

The hard sci-fi aspects

Ok this classification made a bit more sense in my head and probably reads as if it should apply to some aspects of the story I'm not intending, but I don't really know how to come up with a better description quickly

Then, no, not really - particularly if you already have a vague understanding of later XB2.

The one caveat is that there is one particular plot point that would be very useful to know but I'm assuming that's covered in your vague understanding - and even if it wasn't, XB3 itself would eventually make it clear itself.

And yeah, Torna would be completely skippable from a "will anything here matter in XB3?" standpoint.

I dunno, I never used a guide to optimize Triple Triad, and I still think it's great!

Trying to get the Laguna card on Lunar Base is really tough with its insane rule set, but other than that, I don't struggle too much with getting all the rare cards.

Triple Triads simplicity is what really wins it over I think. At least the core gameplay of it.

QB is really good though. Its a very close second.
http://card.psnprofiles.com/1/Gylgamesh501.png
Yeah, Triple Triad's strength is that it's very easy to know what your cards are going to do in any scenario.

Except when Plus is active. I still struggle with that one...!

QB is much better than TT in terms of story and characters.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
Well yeah, Triple Triad doesn't really attempt to have a story. Like yeah, the characters talk about it sometimes, but other than the card club sidequest, it's detached from the rest of the game.

If they ever remake the game and it's not just a straight remake, I'd imagine they'd at least implement a Triple Triad tournament or something like that.

I can't compare it to the game in FF7R, but I definitely agree in general that this was a lot of what made Triple Triad great for me. Was very easy to pick up and play it never really felt intrusive.

For Xenoblade 3, the previous games are barely addressed, outside of the DLC. You should be fine to play it, especially if you know the end of XB2.

Shogun Episode 2 complete!

Getting some Last Samurai vibes from Blackthorne in this one, which I suppose is fitting since Toranaga's actor in this show was in that movie, too!

The scene where Hawthorne is explaining Portugal's plot to Toranaga was so good. Loved seeing their slow realization of what's been going on behind their backs.

And now that I've seen what Gilgamesh Island entails, I'm not sure I want to take the time to do all this either! Based on what I'm reading here, it looks like I'd need to grind levels quite a bit to even have a chance at completing all this because it's apparently still hard even at max levels.

Man, I was kinda looking forward to seeing how it ended. Guess there's always YouTube! Maybe it's time to move toward the end of the game now, after all.

Just do it on easy mode. You can switch back to normal after if you like.

Yeah, I guess I can. I don't necessarily like switching to easy mode, but it's better than trying to grind through it.

I didn't grind for the fight on normal and didn't really struggle, but I had also done all sidequests up until that point. Was close to level 50 IIRC.

Well Xenoblade 3 is at least starting much stronger than 2 did, in large part because Noah blows Rex out of the water.

If Noah and Mio aren't an item by the end of this game there's going to be hell to pay.

I was really curious to see what the Temple of the Ancients looked like in Rebirth. So far, it's living up to the hype.

Although it's weird that they changed its location from the original game.

It's also weird that they seem to have mixed in elements of the Whirlwind Maze in here. I guess they can reuse it in the third game, but still!

Role's just reduced. I think his dialogue (at least in Japanese) may all be edits from his earlier dialogue too, due to the actor's death.

I mean, he was barely in this stretch of the original game anyway. The only part of his that got cut was Gongaga (and Wutai, but I'm sure we'll visit there in part 3).

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Chapter 13 complete!

Well, the Temple of the Ancients was a wild ride! Great atmosphere, the slow buildup of Cloud becoming more and more unhinged as you progressed, the Cetra giving you their history and the backstory of Jenova and the Gi, all good. Good boss fights here, all around. I expected Cait Sith to charge in to save the day here, but it was still nice to see.

So the Black Materia gives Sephiroth the power to traverse these alternate worlds? I guess the White Materia did that for Aerith (and is now doing it for Cloud). Also the Reunion here is not just about Jenova, but about all the alternate worlds being merged back into one.

I assume the Cloud I'm controlling now is a different one than who I've been controlling up to this point, so are we going to have Cloud vs. Cloud at the end? Is Zack going to show up to try to save the day here, too? I can't tell if they're deliberately trying to tease me into thinking Aerith will live this time, only to pull the rug out from under you at the last moment, or if she's actually going to survive. Guess I'll find out soon!
