Mario 3 and World are in because those are the games the rest of 2D Mario are measured against. When 3 came out it was as if kids forgot 1 (the monumental original) even existed. Games that keep the franchise super strong are just as important as comeback games. If they belong roughly to the same era well tough luck, that Mario era was just super strong.
why do we need 2 2D Mario games to measure others against if you guys argue 2D Mario post-World is irrelevant
3D Mario is more popular now, so shouldn't we have a 3D rep that functions as a yardstick like Galaxy?
