Do you turn on your phone's ringtone/notification sounds?

Board 8 » Do you turn on your phone's ringtone/notification sounds?
I just got a new phone and it made a noise when I got a notification and startled me a little. After thinking about it, I'm pretty sure I've kept my phone (well, phones) on vibrate only for like 10+ years. I think at some point I just stopped bothering to change it back after going to class and such

Heck, even my alarm is just my phone vibrating most of the time!

I assume I'm the weird one here but I wonder if there's anyone else on Team Vibrate

If Im expecting a very important call or text or email Ill keep the volume on but only when Im home and the phone is not on me

other than that its on vibrate at all times

I keep both on most of the time, or notifications only at work. Fortunately my ringtone can be mistaken for classical music.

a ringtone that lasts for 4507 seconds seems excessive

I dont even have my phone ring when someone calls if they arent in my phone book. If they want me for something actually important, leave a message.

A prime example; alas, mine is a melancholic Castlevania violin tune.

I use my phone extensively for work so I can't do that

I'd probably have it on vibrate normally.
No problem!
This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
I sometimes turn the ringer on if i'm expecting a critical phone call and then i regret it because i always forget to turn it off again.

I have it on vibrate 99.9% of the time.

Used to be I would get a bunch of different tones and personalize all my contacts so I would know who was texting me just by noise.

At some point around turning 30 a switch apparently flipped in me and I started getting extremely annoyed by all the sounds.

So yeah team silent babyyy
I don't kill... but I don't lose either.
I have mine make noise for the alarm, but calls and texts are basically always on vibrate.
I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways.

I didn't think about this either but I'm the same way. I got my current phone in 2019 and I never even set a ringtone or a notification sound because I keep them all muted.

I do use it as a morning alarm with actual sound though.
HDT
I used to leave it on silent 100% of the time but these days I just silence it while at the office and have it on the rest of the time with auto do-not-disturb set while I'm sleeping (with a short whitelist for emergencies)

If I had it on vibrate, I wouldn't know it was ringing/notifying. Usually when I'm home, I leave it in my room and then it inevitably rings when I'm making lunch. The only time vibrate would work is when I'm out of the house and it's in my pocket.

I wasn't aware perma-vibrate was so common.
Only the exceptions can be exceptional.
Yes, the dopamine from having sound on just hits different

I think I have a routine on my phone that puts it on vibrate, but I somehow accidentally deactivated it and never bothered to turn it back on

For calls mostly. Notifications only sometimes when I know I'm expecting texts.

I never bought any of them or used them, I've always been a on silent person. But plenty of friends did.

Vibrate only with most app-related notifications off, unless I'm expecting an important call, then I'll un-mute it for that.

What in the world? I also had no idea this was a thing. When did people start silencing their phones all the time? It must have increased as the number of apps sending notifications has increased.

This. I barely ever get robo-calls, and people very rarely text me, so I might get one or two notifications a day.

If I get a notification, I get to hear the THPS3 objective noise, and if I get a call, some nice Shibuya Scramble music fills the air.

I used to have an app that would mute and unmute for me on a schedule, but it quit working a long while ago and I never found a replacement.
Vibrate for everything, and it's strong enough that you can actually hear it if the phone is in the same room, sometimes even outside of the room. Some phones have weak vibration though so I understand needing sound.

Around 10 years ago I had the MGS sound for texts and it was kinda fun but also grating. I think I had Pokemon Red battle theme for calls.

Someone at an ice cream store had the Steel Samurai ringtone and I flipped out.

As for me, always silent. During work hours, I wear an Apple Watch so that the vibration goes to my watch instead.

What? How do you know someone is calling you if sound isn't on? Is the phone right in front of your eyes all day? I understand turning sound off for notifications, especially if you keep the phone online, but turning it off for calls is quite strange.

I bet everyone who uses sound on calls actually hears the vibration first most of the time. Same with alarms. It's not surprising unless you somehow never learned that vibration is literally sound.

You only hear the vibration if the phone is relatively close to you.

I mean, if my phone isn't close enough to hear/feel the vibration I probably wouldn't rush to answer it even if it was ringing

So try saying that incredulously, instead of "in front of your eyes all day"

"Is the phone relatively close to you all day???"

Uh, yeah

Yeah? What part isn't clear? It's normal for the phone to be left in another room, for instance.

i know that we get hit with way, way, way too many spam calls in general here in the US so maybe that's part of the element. even with spam blockers on they're so frequent it's nuts.

still have sounds on though because no i'm not hearing or feeling the vibration unless it's literally on me and even then if i'm focused or listening to something i'm gonna miss it.
