I think the point was that Metroid was actually famous for the reveals that you played as a girl which was huge at the time yet was given no credit at all. Not that she should've been above Lara.
Also since Samus is much more recognizable to people on the street, partially due to Smash but still, than some of the answers here it's a bit of a moot point.
