Nice. While most seem to agree that 4-1 promises more than it delivers, most also believed that that's not really 4-1's fault and rated it highly.

Summary:

Apollo kicks off his career boldly by defending the only son of a well known gangster family, Wocky Kitaki. But you can't solve a crime without panties.

Main Characters: Apollo Justice, Trucy Wright, Phoenix Wright, Ema Skye, Klavier Gavin, The Judge
Other Characters: Alita Tiala, Director Hickfield, Guy Eldoon, Plum Kitaki, Wocky Kitaki, Winfred Kitaki, Pal Meraktis, Wesley Stickler

My rating: 1.5/10. Day 1 is a contender for worst day in the series. Even outside of panties, it's just a lot of meandering and the Mr. Hat stunt to buy time is...really awful and feels like a mean-spirited parody of the things the Defense does to buy time in the OT. Wocky is always in contention for worst defendant (or at least, least helpful defendant) in the series. It's telling that Wocky is probably not even the bottom 3 worst things in the case. I do think Day 2 does a lot to turn this around. The murder is interesting, Meraktis is one of the more interesting one-case victims, and Eldoon's turn is really nice. Alita is a nothing culprit, though.

Basically killed this game for me. It actually makes me think I needed to make Big Top 1.5
No problem!
This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Was gonna give this a 2 for the panties, but then the intro post reminded me of the Mr. Hat BS.

1.5
It's tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.
7.5

It's not bad. Yes, Wocky is annoying, but most of the other characters (I choose to ignore Hotti's presence) are pretty good, and the mystery is fun.
Acting like this is worse than Big Top is absolutely cap.
:)
5/10

Not bad. One thing I think this case does do well is give us enough side characters that we cant deduce the culprit by process of elimination. Many other cases Ill often suspect someone not because they seem suspicious but because theyre the only reasonable option left.

The first investigation day might be the single worst segment in any Ace Attorney game. It's a flagrant waste of time and showed that the game had no respect for the player, the characters, or the world the OT established. I might be overstating the case a bit, but it's so bad forcing you to run meaningless errands for the entire day and then introduce the murder in passing at the end.

The rest of the case is actually pretty okay (not to say it doesn't have some more bad moments mixed in there) but I have to dock it major points for that first investigation day.

It's my favorite case from AJ so that's saying something. Stickler prevents this case from being more than a 6.

I actually think this one is pretty ok! Not the best but better than what follows.

Decidedly one of my least faves. Day 1 is beyond boring and day 2 is not much better. The cast is ok but everything feels kind of flat. Eldoon can't save it. Apollo very obviously doesn't care about this case - why should we? Also the Mr Hat thing might be one of the most insulting moments ever but it's so bad it's almost good.
4/10 just for some of the cast

Maybe overrating this, I'll have to adjust my rankings at the end I think ... So far I haven't found any case to be completely irredeemable, with the worst ones being too short for me to really be mad at ...

Anyway, I kinda like this one. The cast is really great, full of characters who almost feel contradictory. The yakuza family that actually wants to come clean, the kid who talks big but is actually a bit of a weakling, ect. I honestly even liked the initial investigation day, even though it wasn't exciting. Piecing together other mysteries before the murder reveal is a kind of thing I wish the series would do more of! Though I do think that 3-2's method of "you're not solving a murder ... psyche!" is better.

But, and oh my god this is a big but ... Fuck Stickler. Good fucking god he just drags this damn case so hard. I have to sit here uncomfortably sifting through some weirdo obsessed with a teenager's underpants for god knows how long. And like I get this conceptually, the whole "oh he's a pompous and proper rich uni student, but wuhoh, he's actually bad", but like Wellington did it already. It doesn't also help that his testimony includes a second Perceive tutorial/explanation and the dumbass Mr. Hat thing (and I love Mr. Hat) ... Actually these things might even be more damning than the underwear shit.

I'm begging you give me the Kitakis and Eldoon again, but leave any mention of panties back in 2007 or whenever this game came out.
6/10

It's OK. I'll go to bat for this case. It starts off really rough, but gets better as it goes. It does a lot right:
  • Having a murderer-turned-victim where the reason a lot of stuff happened is because of them is a nifty twist.
  • The surrounding cast is really strong. Eldoon rules, the Kitakis are fun, and I contend Stickler is entertaining and has great animations.
  • Alita revealing at the end that she only hired you because she thought you'd suck as a lawyer is extremely funny.
  • The part where you walk in on the murderer tampering with the crime scene is tense as hell and really cool.
Play Outer Wilds
I do love the bit with Alita saying she hired you because she was looking to hire the worst lawyer

I actually kind of liked it, and while the characters weren't good, they weren't offensive to me, either. I thought the case itself was pretty good. Keep in mind the "average" score for an AA case for me is like an 8, while the average for most people here is more like a 7.
"Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So... what is a party?"
"You drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think."
I'd say my average scores are pretty high

4-2 is just a bottom three case and is being rated accordingly

This has always felt like the epitome of a mediocre case to me. There are about equal good and bad things here, and I find it strange that it's quite so hated compared to other cases I'd put on a similar level (2-2 feels very similar in quality to me, for example). Definitely fairly low-tier for the series, but deserves to be above the absolute trough of the rankings.
And if you don't know, now you know.

I like Wocky more than most people I feel like. His sprites are endearing.

Basically everything MSG said. I acknowledge this is probably too high a rating, but it's still AJ's best case by far, so.

Mr. Hat was a true jump the shark moment for this game, the first investigation day tries your patience to a ridiculous degree, and Klavier sucks as much as he ever will, but the actual case is pretty cool and the peaks (the second investigation day, mostly) make up for a lot of the rougher parts.

Maybe thats it. I love the first investigation in this case, with how it presents things very differently and ties everything into the central mystery. The actual bulk of the case is okay but its a great setup and introduction to the world of Apollo Justice.

This case has an abundance of extremely annoying characters and gags and drags. Panties should never be in a game I'm playing, sorry, you're too Japanese.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can think this case and Big Top are vastly different in terms of quality. They're basically guilty of the same stuff and it's just a matter of how much each annoyed you.
No problem!

Ill be honest I don't remember day 2 like at all because by the end of day 1 I was just entirely checked out. I suspect if I replay AJ this could go even lower.

I guess my problem is that the world of Apollo Justice isn't very good. It's a world where everyone's life sucks and everyone is miserable because of it (except for Trucy, who is the true bright spot of the game). It just feels so tonally dissonant from the rest of the series. Like yeah, it's a series about solving murders, but it still manages to be light and optimistic at the same time, except for here.

I guess I dont mind that. At the end of the day the story of Apollo Justice goes in an optimistic direction though its harder along the way. But I really liked that it was more grounded than previous games, which I also liked about 1-5.

Yeah, it kinda gets there at the end, but I wouldn't argue the game is more grounded despite being darker. Those aren't the same thing.

It's definitely not more grounded. May actually be less than PW games on the whole somehow despite channeling ghosts not being a widely accepted element in the cases.

And believe me I like (relatively) grounded. 1-5 and 2-4 are probably the least ridiculous cases in the early series and they're my two favorites.
