Dear person who made Gears and Gambits, it makes no sense whatsoever for the elemental symbols above the enemies heads to represent their weakness rather than their type. I have no idea how I managed to beat the first two without that understanding.

I made that mistake in Fort Condor and Gears & Gambits

I should finish Cait Sith's legendary bout today then we'll see how hard the two special ones are

After that its just rushing the rest of hard mode for the platinum

Cosmo Canyon Complete!

That you have to go from one side of the map to the other practically to get to a specific spot is not great map design tbqh. Worst designed area IMO. Also Gears and Gambits is also really badly designed. It's more about spamming low cost bots than any real strategy. I wonder if they ever play tested it. Cause it doesn't feel like it. Of all the mini games, I think it's probably the worst. First couple of levels weren't too bad, but that last one was awful.

Chocobo Racing is great, though I still can't beat the Gold Cup.

Still top 1 game for me though.

I imagine Gears & Gambits is meant to be a tribute to FFXII

And in that regard they succeeded

OK, making solid progress.

Beat Chapter 11 and started 12. Haven't had many problems, Gi Nattak was a bit of a prick but that's all. I imagine Rufus is going to suuuuuuuck.

I was dreading it but I actually think I did Rufus first try... maybe second, but nowhere near as bad as I feared the fight would be.

What I felt like made the difference for me was enemy skill Plasma Discharge. it felt like I was able to keep Rufus in a pretty consistent state of Pressured while it kept going off for every ATB bar. Maybe I just got lucky though... also don't remember what I did for equipment but I was probably equipping the medal that lets you do level 3 limits & I feel like it'd fill up by the time phase 2 came around.
The window to pressure Rufus after he Reloads was just unforgivably small

I found the 1v1 fights in general quite unforgiving - I struggled with Dyne for instance

But Roche in Chapter 11 was surprisingly easy. Fire elemental on the armor helped.

phew one of the two Chadley special legendary fights down

one more of those and 5 more chapters of hard mode

won't be doing the other one until I get all of cloud's manuscripts to get max damage on his weapon

oh ya Rufus down

once you know the approach he isn't bad. What's bad is having to reset your materia before the fight every time.

Beat Rufus. I found it quite intense because it was more of a cagey, low offense fight. Eventually found my openings and beat him. Got a little ways into the temple too.

Okay, this Odin fight is dumb.
The user formerly known as Ashethan
it was definitely the hardest fight of the regular game for me, even after finding all of the summon statues

don't forget to keep a de-buff on him at all times (debrave works)

I never did beat Odin. Fuck that bs.

I tried to beat Odin unsuccessfully several times

Took a break to do something else, came back, and won first try

I found Odin pretty easy if you just parry him a bunch but I never fought him on Hard mode.
skull
I surprisingly did ok with Odin once I got the hang of him. To the point I didn't massively struggle with the fight vs. him and Alexander together, though it did take me a couple of tries. I think I had the revival earrings on to take a Zantetsuken hit, but I'm not sure if I needed it.

In fact there's been a few fights now where I wore those and ended up not needing them when I eventually won (Dyne, Roche, Rufus).

that sure was a gauntlet of very specific setups every fight

I'm not sure what I'm dreading more

All the c13 bosses and the associated managing of MP over the whole chapter or all the c14 bosses, inevitable deaths, and restarts at who-knows-where

I take comfort from at least knowing I beat Bizarro Seph pretty easily the first time through.

Rebirth beaten!

So let's get what I didn't like out of the way first.

Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon weren't well designed at all. Both are difficult to navigate, especially if you want to complete the world intel missions. I realize it's probably to encourage exploration, but I feel like other areas pointed you in the right direction much better than Cosmo Canyon and Gongaga.

Some of the mini games were really bad. Moogle House was boring and toward the end a bit frustrating. I never felt compelled to try it again. Except for the ending, which moogle cloud was adorable. Cactuar Crush was also frustrating and not very fun. It's just normal battling with special rules. I got the bare minimum, then never bothered with it again. Gears and Gambits on the other hand just has no strategy to it. You're better off creating a really cheap unit you can spam than even think about affinities. Which is a real shame. The game had potential.

The Cait Sith portion of Nibelheim was also really bad. Throwing boxes. How fun. I understand each character needed a section of their own. But Cait's could have been a little shorter without losing anything. Also some of those enemies were kind of bullshit.

The Zach sections were kind of dull too. We could've had a couple battles with Zach. Just sayin'. Then we might not have gotten a tutorial in the final battle!

With all that out of the way... 10/10 game. Not sure how they can surpass it with the third one. I mean it won't have the Tifa/Aerith interactions. Unless we get another timeline I guess. But Tifa/Aerith might be the best friendship in the series. Yuffie got some major upgrades to her character by being promoted to non-optional, and I love it. It lets her bond with the rest of the teammates. I feel like having an optional character was cool in the 90's, but today in a cast this size, they sacrifice development for optional characters, and I'll take the development any day. Her reaction to Aerith's death might be the most heartbreaking (its her or Tifa). And her reaction to Cait's betrayal is just perfect. The music in this game is phenomenal. They expanded on the story in all the right ways. I don't even mind Nicer Cid.

The ending was kind of crazy, but I think it's obvious Aerith is part of the lifestream now. And I think the cetra are the white whispers and maybe the Gi are the black whispers or something corrupted by Jenova. I feel like we'll have playable Aerith for at least portions of the next game. And possibly the Final Boss.

Predicitons for part 3:
-Aerith will have playable moments, but remain dead.
-Yuffie will steal only the big materia, and the big materia will have more of a connection to the weapons.
-Cloud will go into an alternate timeline when he goes catatonic. We might even get Tifa traveling into the other timeline when she goes to save Cloud.
-Ruby and Emerald Weapon will 100% be bonus bosses.
-KOTR will be the most grueling Materia to get
-Cissnei will be playable at some point.
The user formerly known as Ashethan
Playable Cissnei is a big swing lol. But it'd be cool.

Demon Gate is a horrendous boss on hard, jesus christ. First time I feel justified blaming the game, because it's such a messy clusterfuck
Not to be confused with XIII_Minerals.
don't recall having any issues but I think I was actively deploying the cheesestrats from the brutal challenges into that fight so that might be why.
Another prediction for part 3:

The battle with Safer Sephiroth will take place over multiple timelines, and each time he uses Supernova it will actually destroy an entire timeline.

The user formerly known as Ashethan
man this game is so good

I know they already said no DLC but I would kill for a Cid or Vincent version of Intergrade

I decided to do this and adopt the Yuffie/Aerith Brumal Form/ATB Ward combo, and it kind of ruled. I still died a couple of times though just because the battle is such a stupid clusterfuck, but my DPS was off the charts

Then the final boss rush was kind of OK. I died a few times, but the checkpointing was quite generous. I was surprised that I struggled mostly with the final fight vs. Sephiroth, because most of his moves are so easily countered and avoided, but he'd ravage me with Whisper Cannon before I could hit his wing, or he'd use Heartless Angel when I had no ATB to heal. Took me a fair few attempts, but unlike the Demon Gate I don't blame the game at all. Fun boss.

I don't really see the problem with the Game Over options? Like, don't they just go in order of how much further it will send you back? So the top one will send you back to just before the one you died on, and the next will go back a bit further, and the bottom will send you back to before Jenova? Eh, whatever

Anyway, I enjoyed playing it in hard mode and just blasting through the story. The game really is amazing, the combat is mostly so good (though I never quite got used to Cait, but definitely enjoyed him more the second time through). It does have the same issue of the first game where it's like, go into a battle, use Assess, realise you don't have the right materia equipped and either try to fudge it or restart the fight and requip materia one-by-one. Materia loadouts would be appreciated! Also having to manually exit the simulator to reattach Materia is kind of criminal?

Remaining stuff:
-The stupid frog jumping minigame
-3D Brawler with Seph
-Some snaps photos
-Apparently I didn't do perfect Yuffie in Loveless
-Burrow for some stuff underground? Apparently?
-Didn't complete Cactuar Crush normal mode, apparently? I guess I didn't get the top score in one of them.
-QB games at the saucer, which I had totally missed.
-ALL THE BRUTAL AND LEGENDARY CHALLENGES LOL

Let's do it
Not to be confused with XIII_Minerals.
Ok.

Did the first brutal challenge but died twice on the second one because the Aerith/Yuffie strat stopped working (being turned to stone is so fuckin irritating) so gave that a break and went to Legendary challenges

Cheesed it with YT guides and have thus far done Red, Aerith, Cloud and Barrett. Still some more left to do. I feel like I'm making decent progress, but I might just run out of time.
Not to be confused with XIII_Minerals.
Before I started doing cheese strats i was running magnify-resist and opening each brutal fight with that. Not sure if there's room (or atb bars, or magnify availability) to fit that in but could be the way to go?

(..now I'm debating if it was even called resist in rebirth or if I'm conflating that with original 7...)

Oh wait no yeah resist is a thing to protect against detrimental status

There was like only one fight I ever used it

Got Odin down to about 10-15% left, just needed an ATB on Seph to revive Cloud, who had a limit break. Wasn't far away.

Didn't do too bad for a first attempt, but I've run out of time, so it's gonna have to wait until August, infuriatingly

I would have won but I used too much MP with Seph early and I never quite recovered, I was down to a really small amount by the end
