Here's the bracket for Best Animated Series 2024:

https://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=478702

As you can see, I did adjust some of the seeding from the nominations received, so some shows are a few seeds higher or lower than their nomination count would normally put them. For the most part, though, shows are seeded according to nominations.

I'll start the first matches hopefully tomorrow!

That's a winnable matchup, MLP has underperformed historically. Darkwing Duck would be a tougher out, but it's a solid midcarder at best, MAYBE upper midcarder on a good day, and Hazbin Hotel is a COMPLETE unknown. Helluva Boss got stomped by Animaniacs as a 1-seed in 2022, though Hazbin is probably stronger, we just don't know how much stronger.

Oh I actually didn't know that, I figured MLP was a powerhouse. It will be interesting to see how Hazbin performs

I was confusing Beast Wars with Beastars for a second and hated that it was going against X-Men 97'....and then I realized my mistake and saw it was going against Arcane instead! That might be worse. But talk about opposite sides of the animation game there lol
Arcane underperformed in 2022. Deep cut Disney Saturday morning show Marsupilami of all things gave it a run for its money, then it got creamed by Death Note in the second round.

That Rescue Rangers/Harley Quinn matchup is brutal for me and I have no idea which Im going to vote for. On the plus side, at least one of my favorites will win a match either way.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes had 4 noms and TTGL had 3 by my count, but the latter got the higher seed? did I miss something?

I guess the seed numbers wouldn't really make a difference in an 8vs9 matchup but still. rough matchup considering I nominated them both.

getting Halo/Starcraft vibes from that Simpsons vs. Frieren matchup too, lol...
Oh I didn't expect nominations to be over already whoops

Most of what I wanted to see was already nominated and doing well, so thanks guys! Looking forward to voting
Sabotaging my favorites bracket by having Fillmore go way further than it has a chance to (that is to say, past round 1) but I'm just excited to see it get seconded

Galactic Heroes was one of the shows that got bumped down a seed or two due to its tournament history.

Welp, Undone has no hope, but maybe Scavengers Reign has a chance...
Cowboy Bebop > Backrooms (Kane Pixels)
Serial Experiments Lain > Steins;Gate
Cowboy Bebop > Serial Experiments Lain

Some observations before we get into the thick of things:

  • Fillmore(!) has one of the roughest draws of the bunch, but I wouldn't will BoJack round 1 on anyone. Would still highly recommend the former-- rediscovered it last month and was treated to a solid, sincere spoof of 70s police serials.
  • Scavenger's Reign has been one of the coolest discoveries from this year's crop. Genuinely great to see streaming originals repped so generously.
  • Backrooms is part of a relatively manageable portion of the bracket, granted MLP is as nerfed as people are speculating. It is still fairly niche though, so who can say if it'll find an audience with the group here.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh(!) vs. Pokemon could be an all-time classic. One is a contest winner, the other is one of the biggest media franchises of all time.
  • Lain was snubbed in the last contest, but has enjoyed a massive resurgence in the 2020s which has played into its fairly high seeding. Does Board 8 love Lain? Let's all love Lain !

Honestly, BoJack Horseman has been one of the biggest underperformers of the last few tournaments. Always seems to get a high seed and always seems to bow out in the first or second round. Still, King Of The Hill and Rick and Morty both had the same problem, and both have since broken through numerous times, so if this is BoJack's year that's obviously bad news for Fillmore.

Pokemon's best ever tournament performance was a trip to the Elite Eight, but that was about a decade ago, it's been a solid midcarder for the most part since then. We'll see what Yu-Gi-Oh does now that it's back in the field. Technically, it's riding a seven match winning streak into this one.

Serial Experiments Lain was in the very first tournament, aaaaaaaaaaaallllll the way back in 2002! Got a #7 seed and lost to Mission Hill in the first round. Since then, I don't think it's even been in the tournament much. It might have won one match in its history, I can't be sure. I was wondering why it was getting so many nominations this time around, in fact it would be higher than #5 if I hadn't bumped it down a seed line due to its poor tournament history. Perhaps I misjudged it?

ooof, fair enough.

Are the past contests documented anywhere? or alternatively, got a list of past finals/past winners?

I've also held tournaments in 2002, 2003, 2004, and I think 2007. AFAIK, the winners of those tournaments were...

2002: The Simpsons, in absolutely CRUSHING fashion (doubled all seven of its opponents and I believe it beat its first three opponents by a score of like 90-5), beat Super Milk Chan, Love Hina, Clerks, Family Guy, South Park, Cowboy Bebop, and Evangelion in that order... also there was an extremely controversial Dragonball Z vs. Evangelion quarterfinal match.
2003: Cowboy Bebop
2004: Futurama
2007: Monster

Thanks for sharing all that! oh Monster, yeah that was the peak Monster time on B8, very nice.

Futurama's consistent success even in 2022 while its glory days were so long ago is interesting. Simpsons 2002, no surprise there for sure. I had to google Super Milk Chan as the one I didn't recognize there, geez... Clerks animated series is also a deep cut, but legendary.

Seconding the recommendation of Fillmore!

Loved it as a kid, went back to revisit it as an adult and got a whole new appreciation for it now that I can understand all the references and inspirations. Great show

I THOUGHT I was getting deja vu from Ed Edd n Eddy vs. Magic School Bus. It was a 2nd round match last time, and a barn burner at that.

Not really sure about b8 specifically, but my impression in general is that Lain has always been one of those that's well-regarded by those (not including me...) who watched it but that it didn't have a huge watch-rate compared to the more popular shows.

Day 1 Results:

(1) Avatar: The Last Airbender: 22
(16) The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.: 4

(9) Attack On Titan: 13
(8) Hilda: 8

(5) SpongeBob SquarePants: 20
(12) Black Lagoon: 9

(13) Clone High: 13
(4) Home Movies: 10

Avatar showing why it's the overall #1 seed for the second straight year by stomping a mudhole in Saiki K. and walking it dry, Attack On Titan shows that it's still a solid midcarder by beating Hilda fairly comfortably, Spongebob let Black Lagoon make it interesting before running away with the last half of the match, and Clone High with the upset over Home Movies, showing that it probably should've been seeded a line or two higher.

(7) Tom & Jerry: 15
(10) The Spectacular Spider-Man: 10

(15) A Place Further Than The Universe: 12
(2) Beavis and Butthead: 11

Beavis and Butthead landed its best seeding since 2002, and then goes out and drops a massive turd against its first round opponent in our first major upset of the tournament... though perhaps it's just Beavis and Butthead being way, way overseeded. Space Ghost and Cowboy Bebop did quite well to set up a match of Adult Swim originals in the second round,

Shocked to see A Place Further Than the Universe winning, though I guess I think it did win board 8's anime of the year contest for that year which maybe gave it some extra publicity specifically here. It is my favorite anime though so it makes me very happy.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes also a bit of surprise, though maybe it shouldn't be. I'd only put the show in the pretty good category personally, but also TTGL is one of those popular anime I've just never found that appealing
I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways.
woo LotGH. Enjoying this win before its inevitable R2 blowout but ideally it can exceed Kaguya's performance.

Hopefully A Place Further Than The Universe can win some more matches too, great show.
(11) Rugrats: 18
(6) Paranoia Agent: 16

(3) Dragon Ball Z: 22
(14) Moral Orel: 9

(7) The Boondocks: 16
(10) Trigun: 14

(2) X-Men: The Animated Series: 27
(15) Monogatari Series: 5

Bluey: 16
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 14

What an exciting day that was! Three matches went down to the wire: Rugrats knocked off Paranoia Agent (which made it to the Sweet 16 in 2022), The Boondocks slipped past Trigun in a midcard slobberknocker, and Bluey pulled off the upset in overtime over TMNT, which had been rebounding in recent years but goes out in the first round this time. Also, X-Men had an extremely impressive votal... a sign of a possible X-Men '97 bump, or just its usual strength?

This is actually Bluey's first ever tournament win! It now stands at 1-1 all time, with its loss coming in 2022 to Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

As for TMNT, it's had a long and storied tournament history, making it all the way to the quarterfinals in 2002 and then IIRC the FINALS in 2004 (losing to Futurama). It fell off in the years after, but in recent years it has been coming back up and is considered a solid midcarder or even upper midcarder. It got to the Sweet 16 in 2022, losing in a fairly close match to Looney Tunes (who it beat to get to the finals in 2004, and in 2002, it won an epic double overtime match in the round of 32 against Outlaw Star, who had just finished dogwalking Looney Tunes in the second round by a ton of votes in one of the most inexplicable results in tournament history considering how well Looney Tunes has done since and how hard Outlaw Star fell off in subsequent tournaments).

O interesting, I didn't know Bluey had been in before. I feel like it's a show that's likely to do better and better the more culturally visible it becomes and the more people realize how good it is. Here in Canada I was only just hearing about it in Guardian articles (about how much parents loved it) back in 2022 but today it's all over the place, the merch is in grocery stores and my irl friends are watching it.

(16) Scavengers Reign: 11
(1) Hazbin Hotel: 9

(8) Archer: 19
(9) Reboot: 6

(12) Backrooms (Kane Pixels): 13
(5) My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: 12

(4) Darkwing Duck: 14
(13) Puella Magi Madoka Magica: 14

Hazbin Hotel came in as one of the most hyped rookie shows ever and landed a #1 seed after a bevy of nominations and doubles, but after clinching a top seed and a match against fellow rookie Scavengers Reign in the first round, it, as Lute would put it, blew its shot like... yeah. My Little Pony was beating Backrooms from pillar to post all day, but a furious rally in the last few hours secured a Backrooms victory. Meanwhile, Madoka Magica was doing the same thing to Darkwing Duck, until Darkwing Duck said "let's get dangerous" and rallied to force a tiebreaker.

(14) Kill la Kill: 14

(10) Fairly OddParents: 23
(7) American Dad: 14

(2) Animaniacs: 27
(15) China, IL: 4

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: 20
Darkwing Duck: 15

The tie train keeps rolling! This time, it's Infinity Train that's trapped in the fight of its life with Kill la Kill and that match will continue today. Meanwhile, The Fairly OddParents has one of its strongest matches ever, only to run into a likely buzzsaw in Animaniacs in round two. Ouch. Madoka Magica won its tiebreaker over Darkwing Duck, and will now face Backrooms in a match that it looks like a strong favorite in, but then again, MLP was the favorite in its match too...
