What is Game of the Month Club?
Game of the Month is a community project open to all B8ers where users share, discover, play and/or discuss a select few games every month. The games featured each month are chosen by YOU the users (and Lady Luck)

The Basics
- Each month will usually feature three games that were chosen via a random drawing from a pool of games that users nominated
- For each game you beat, you get a cool point on our just-for-fun standings as well as a nomination for next month's randomized drawing
- In order to receive the point and nomination, you must beat said game within the calendar month
- If you beat one of the current month's games in the previous month, you can apply for a "recently beaten waiver," but you will only receive a point and no nomination should you do so
- Drawing for next month's games is usually on the 25th
- If you periodically keep us posted on your progress and/or talk about different aspects of the games, then everyone will obviously think you are super awesome!

Nomination Rules
- You get one nomination automatically each month
- You receive additional nominations each month for every featured game that you beat
- Each game you nominate has to be unique from all other nominations and cannot include a game that has already been selected for GotM
- Each game must be a standalone game that can be acquired and played on its own (aka cannot be DLC/expansion that requires the base game)
- Nominations only carry over if you beat a featured game after the drawing for next month's games but before the end of the month
- You also have the option of supporting 1 game each month. Your only limitation is that you can't support your own nomination

ArkOfTurus has beaten Awaria

I kinda disliked it? Difficulty felt like a bit much, the dash came one level too late, and I mostly felt like I got lucky rather than I succeeded when I beat the harder levels rather than any sense of success. It wasn't bad, just a bit too frustrating for my tastes, even if it did only take an hour or so to beat.

For some reason, I thought that I would some offensive capability and not a pure dodging game. I still had plenty of fun. I did play two of the 13 missions (12 and one of the middle ones) on easy mode after dying 5+ times while on normal

In Monster Sanctuary, I have over 60% of the map revealed, but I think that I can't do anything else until I beat the alchemist boss in the Magma Caverns. They wiped the floor with me. My team archetype just seems to not work against a team that totally zeroed in on one monster at a time, buff their own team like crazy, and kept stacking debuffs on me. I don't know how it is possible to get 5+ buffs, stack 3+ debuffs, and deal nearly 3000 damage on single turn, but that is what I have to deal with against the boss.

As for the rest of the month, I plan on playing a lot more of Disco Elysium and potentially finish Monster Sanctuary, but I'm just going to drop my four available noms now:

LunarLux
RPG Time: The Legend of Wright
Shantae and the Seven Sirens
Tails of Iron

The good news (until you get to Level 42 since that's the highest level) is that the fights are locked in at the level you originally do them, so it's possible to just brute force them by getting a few more levels.

Started up 428. Just got through the first time block (which is basically a tutorial).

Not changing this line until I beat Seven Heroes (2/24/07) - Fulfilled 2/20/18

i think it's cute but hard mode is prob beyond me
"You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry."
I'm only on level 3 of Awaria and I'm struggling pretty badly already. This might be a "one level every couple days" type of game for me rather than a one sitting game like all of you so far.

Playing on Standard btw

EDIT: Finished Level 4 and definitely not gonna even try to do this in one sitting!
darkx
It's up and down in difficulty so you might get stuck on one level then breeze through the next few.

But it's also not an easy game and doesn't really teach you how to play very well. I suspect a lot of people will get skill-gated hard on level 9 .

My advice is that each time they introduce new machinery, spend a few minutes just figuring out its mechanics/timing. It really helps to not have to learn that on the fly. I might try to put together a few more tips into kind of a cheat sheet even though I'm not an expert at the game, by any means.

Okay, I definitely feel this. So far I've played up through level 8. Levels 1 and 2 were a breeze. 3 and 4 were challenging. 5 and 6 were much easier than 3 and 4 but not tutorial-level easy. 7 and 8 were much harder again.

That level was the hardest in the game by far for me. I think I would have liked the game more if I had done what KCF did, and went easy mode for that level.

Okay, I just looked up a playthough video to see what was the other level I went easy mode on, and it was that level. For some reason, I thought it was earlier in the game.

Level 9 is absolutely infuriating
darkx
I've spent well over 2 hours on level 9. Despite my legitimate urge to break something right now, I refuse to turn the difficulty down.
darkx
Up to level 13 of Awaria, all standard difficulty. I feel like this one should be easier since your dash kills enemies but I was getting tilted so I'll try again tomorrow.

And yes, level 9 was a pain in the ass.

428: Shibuya Scramble is very good, def recommend it
Congrats to azuarc , GotD2 Guru champ!
Made it up through level 11 of Awaria tonight. Not going to try the rest for another couple days at the risk of giving myself an aneurism.
darkx
Beat Level 12 of Awaria. Tried 13 and after only a few tries I was able to get 5/8 so it definitely feels doable.

That said whoever put the quit button directly next to where you're furiously mashing the directional buttons is EVIL.
darkx
Once again, Level 13 is making me want to break things. Like level 9, I've spent over 2 hours of attempts on it. It's funny, everything I've read suggests most people find 12 much more difficult than 13 but 12 only took me a few attempts.
darkx
KCF has beaten Monster Sanctuary

This was unexpected. Given Sean beat it at 87% map and where I was the last time (low-60s%) I played plus me constantly running into walls when facing keeper battles (6 on 6), I thought that I would realistically beat it later in the month (assuming that I could overcome my obstacles).

I realize that there's A LOT of RNG when it comes to battling that just aren't discernable in the moment, so I tried again with the magma cavern keeper battle, and I ended up beating it on one of the first few tries. Then I was just in a groove where nothing could ultimately stop me. I eventually got into the final area last night, but I went to bed hitting another wall against one of the keeper battles there. Today, I went around the map doing other stuff and reached level 41, but I was still getting denied in that fight.

I turned to the internet, and there were suggestions to shift my monsters (all six in my party were unshifted), to get stat boosts and a passive ability. Boy, did that make a huge difference. I guess that I didn't know shifting was basically 100% beneficial and not a pro/con deal. It was still a very difficult challenge with that fight plus the remaining others, but I persevered.

My MVP through the game was probably my Mad Eye who was a debuff maniac. I chose the level 40 ability called Cataclysm I think, and I would use that at the very beginning of each fight just stacking debuff upon debuff to give myself an early advantage that I was bound to not screw up.

I love everything about this game except the extreme difficulty spikes with keeper battles that again often force you to tailor your setup to that fight as opposed to making in-fight adjustments.

I finished with 79% map completion.

I definitely found 13 to be the second hardest level. 12 wasn't exactly easy but there's just so much going on in 13.

I think 13 is infinitely harder than 9. It's not even remotely close. I've been attempting 13 for a few hours each day and the most I've ever gotten was 6/8 and that was once with a ton of luck.
darkx
Does anyone have any tips for 13 (other than turning it to easy, which I refuse to do)? A few more hours later and I'm still no closer to beating it.
darkx
-You can kill all the enemy spawns in 13 by dashing through/near them, not just the small ones. So definitely kill the big skulls and the big ox/stag looking thing.

-Keep moving.

-You can double dash (in 13 only) by pressing the dash button twice quickly, it's a little finicky though.

-Try to get into a rhythm of going back and forth across the room hitting up everything actionable before going back to the other side. Reset machines before you need them if you're not in the habit of already doing that:

Light blue machine - gives you light blue suitcases on almost no cooldown, so there's nothing to do here.

Dark blue machine - gives you striped computer chips(?) if fed a light blue suitcase

Yellow machine - gives you yellow bolts. Double tap interact to take one and reset it to make another.

Red machine - gives red plugs(?) if fed a yellow bolt

Basically you should always reset yellow whenever you grab it, and try to reset the dark blue and red machines while on your way to do other things. You never want to just be sat there waiting for a machine to spit out the part you need.

-Probably obvious, but even if you have no parts in your hand, you can interact with a busted generator to learn what parts it needs.

-This is tricky to master, but try to get comfortable enough controlling your character that you can watch the rest of the screen instead of watching your character. (Honestly this is just a great tip for video games where you directly control your character in general.)

-Just build muscle memory, there's not necessarily more to it than that. It took me like 20-30 tries the first time but I just replayed it to write this post and got it on my first attempt because the muscle memory is already there.
"You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry."
Yeah, pretty much all of that I already knew and was doing, so it's just me sucking.

20-30 tries, huh? I haven't been counting but I've gotta be at WELL over 500.

I'll probably put in a few more hours but if I don't get it by then I'm going to just call it quits rather than waste my month trying to get the point/nom.

HOLY fuck.

darkx has beaten Awaria

After getting 7/8 a couple times my hands furiously went Tony Vlachos in an immunity challenge all over the thing and I eventually got it without even realizing how close I was until I had one item left on the last one. So yeah that kind of game was clearly not my forte and even though I eventually muscled through the finale and even though I think it was a good game, it's not going to turn me on to the genre.
darkx
Haven't beaten 13 yet and this might apply a little less there, but never stop moving and never go backwards.

Awaria beated!

Maybe a bit of Stockholm Syndrome from not wanting to give up but I found this to be a lot of fun. I even went back to do the first 7 levels on hard before giving up on 8.

For level 13, I really had to dial back wanting to dash all the damn time and use it more strategically to kill the dogs and the skulls. Still took probably 75 tries at least.

Beat the first 10 levels of Awaria on Standard

the one thing that annoys me is sometimes the button doesn't seem to register. Especially on like level 9 where you're constantly moving, sometimes it seems like I'm right next to a machine when I press X but it doesn't interact with it. Other than that though it's pretty fun!
Yeah I've had that happen too.

Yeah same. I began to wonder if it was when I would get hit and maybe there were a few frames were it wouldn't register button presses.

Definitely also had that problem. I thought I was just slightly too far away or pressing buttons too frantically, though. It seemed to happen less when I moved with more intention.

ArkOfTurus has beaten Disco Elysium

Did a run as a moralist, because I hadn't before. Still managed to dodge the boring cop achievement, which I will hopefully continue to never get. Also played on hardcore mode, but I know the game too well at this point for it to add much challenge. I feel like I'm at a point, between my playthroughs, and the ones I've watched, that there are only bits and pieces of new things for me to see, but it's still a great time nonetheless.

According to Steam it took me 111 minutes, so pretty short and sweet. The only level that really gave me trouble was 12, and it was mostly just those darn exploding skull things. I actually beat stage 13 on my first try because the dash was so OP. Stage 9 was also pretty tough but once I figured out the pattern it wasn't too bad. For a free game it's actually pretty fun and I'm glad it got picked because I never would have played it otherwise. It's kind of like Overcooked! but with more chaos going on
