Monsters that can give shields to the team are very valuable because of how corruption works.
When your monsters take health damage, a small portion is converted into corruption that will not heal after the battle (while the rest of your HP does)
So after a few battles your monsters might start the fight with 30/50 HP if they have taken enough corruption. There are ways to heal the corruption, but only very few so having lots of shields after each turn prevents you from even taking the corruption to begin with! Very strong!
