Spreadsheet is now updated for post-UFA stuff including rosters, team financials, and free agents. The next Offseason event will be the NFL Draft, which is currently slated to take place on Saturday, April 19th. I will do the usual postings when I next do stuff and hopefully no later then this Saturday will I have the prospects posted.

Live NFL Draft

This is a 7-round affair where teams select college players. There are 32 picks in each round for a total of 224 selections overall. We will be doing a single-day draft again this season. The draft takes place in the spreadsheet as that is where all the info is, and I totally failed in my lone attempt to do a draft in both the spreadsheet and Discord.

In one of the posts below, I will include the draft order again as well as updated draft pick ownerships. I only include ownership of other teams' picks. If you wish to attend the draft at all, it is required that you own a Google account and either PM/DM me or post here the email associated with it so that I can include you as having permission in the spreadsheet and you can sign in and enter the chat function which is located near the top right of the spreadsheet. Most of you have done so in previous years, but there could be a few people wanting to attend this year but have yet to receive permission. You must be on a desktop/laptop to access the chat function that will allow you to enter the live draft.

NFL Draft Rules

1. When it is your time to pick, type your selection in the spreadsheet

2. There is a 5 minute pick limit, which starts when I say something along the lines of "X team is on the clock"

3. If no pick has been made after 5 minutes, I will select the player for you

4. If a user is not present at the time they are on the clock, they will be auto-drafted via rule #3 until they notify me of their return

If I can't or don't want to be here for the draft, what are my options?

Queue - You give me a list of players in order of priority. It can be as few as one and as many as the 250+ prospects that will eventually be in that sheet.

Draft Strategy - You give me a vague or specific set of instructions on how to draft your players. An example of this would be:
Draft best available DT in 1st round
Draft best available player in 2nd-4th rounds
Draft best available player for a position of need in 5th-7th rounds.

Conditionals - You give me a list of conditionals. Unlike the other two examples, this one is best used if you only think that you will be unavailable for a single round. Using QB Trevor Lawrence as an example:
1. Draft QB Trevor Lawrence
2. Draft the best available CB with a 1st round grade
3. Draft the best available player for a position of need

Even if you plan to attend the draft, it would really help me out if you send me something from the previous post.

I cannot stress enough just how important this is to me. Even if you plan to attend the draft, there is only one person guaranteed to be present for the draft, and that's me because otherwise there is no draft. So the draft runs as smoothly as it possibly, I create a spreadsheet where I craft detailed draft plans for all user teams in case I have to draft for them. If I am given a strategy/queue/conditional (especially one that encompasses the entire draft) from a team, then I do not have to waste my time and effort for said team. Please do this as having to come up with draft plans for 15+ user teams would possibly take me 10 hours.

Ok, so scouting reports have always seemed like a crapshoot. So I spent way more time than I would like to admit performing manual research on the matter to try de-mystify it (i.e. manually recording entire draft classes scouting reports and then recording the players actual stats post draft). I believe I gathered enough data to do so.

Read it. Or don't. The exercise was fruitful to me at least but maybe it will be useful / insightful for someone else within the project.

I won't be at the draft but if someone wants to ditch like a 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th for a 6th or 7th and a future pick for cost reasons, hit me up before the draft.
With less than 24 hours till draft time (presumably), it's time to drop the mock.

Signing Draft Picks

Quite a few teams have done it already, but now's the time to get those draftees' signatures and have them suit up for your squad. It is essentially just like signing your own free agents, but you don't have to worry about holdouts/franchise tags, and you typically have far fewer players to sign.

There are a few things you need to keep in mind as you read your PM/DM. One, you will not know the overall ratings until they are signed. That is an in-game mechanic and not something by my design. Two, the desired deals for each player, in terms of length, is based on where they were taken. It is as follows:

Top 5 - Six years
6-10 - Five years
11-32 - Four years
2nd-4th rounds - Three years
5th-7th rounds - One year

Once again, you do not have to offer them their exact deals and can change their length, but I advise you to sign them to the length that they ask for because if you change the length, they might ask for considerably more money.

The deadline to sign your rookies will be Sunday, April 27th at 9 PM ET . Should you idle, I will sign all your rookies to the deals that they are asking for (such a severe punishment I know). If you have roster or financial issues, then I will prioritize players who will fill roster holes and then in descending order of when they were selected until your roster is filled/you run out of money.

AI trade

Dolphins receive:
G Austin Blythe (90 overall, 32 years old)
WR Curtis Wasserman (77, 23)
CB Bobby Gooden (75, 31)

Pumpkins receive:
G Michael Onwenu (81, 25)
MLB John Vargas (78, 23)
CB Pete Pickens (78, 24)

The Dolphins will incur a $5.40 mil cap penalty to turn $11.6 mil in cap hits into $11.7 mil in cap hits

The Pumpkins will incur a $3.73 mil cap penalty to turn $15.3 mil in cap hits into $8.85 mil in cap hits

The Dolphins OL has arguably been the second or third-least talented in the past few seasons, and with their cap space heading into draft pick signings, it was unlikely that they would be able to improve upon it much in free agency. While they are giving up on both of their 2nd round picks and a 4th rounder from the previous draft and getting a decent cap hit penalty for next season, 2/3 didn't have a path to playing time to make any sort of impact, and the other was so-so. They do land a 90 G that still has 5 or more seasons left in him, and he's been a great one averaging over 5 blocks per sack allowed over his four seasons with the Pumpkins (which includes a 49 and 15 season). The help mitigate the cap penalty, the Pumpkins also included a slot receiver who will be up for RFA next offseason. They also get a salary-dumped CB back they can easily release if the AI wishes to, and to the Dolphins' benefit will ensure that Marcus Lattimore remains in the CB rotation with Pickens gone.

The Pumpkins were fortunate to be in good cap health, but after matching multiple RFA offers and re-signing a 99 OT, they simply ran out of cap space this offseason. They have a great OL, so even though they have to part with an important member of it, they have some depth to hopefully withstand the loss of Blythe. They also part with an expensive #4 CB and an excess WR further help with cap issues. They get back a G who was unimpressive last season but at least has upside in a different situation, a CB who can compete for the slot job, and a MLB who can compete for the backup job now and probably starting job next season.

The Pumpkins understand the trade parameters, financial impact, history of players involved, and what each team is hoping to achieve. This trade is now official.

KCF's Favorite Picks

Because this used to take me 3-4 hours to do when I would do three in a round + honorable mentions + regret picks + several favorite classes, I'm further cutting back this season and just doing one pick per round in a single post and then the one draft class at the end and retiring the regret pick for this season at least. I will avoid picks/draft classes that I was responsible for (okay I realized after typing everything up that I did include one, but I don't feel like changing it).
KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy
First Round: Broncos WR Terry McLaurin (27th overall) - The Broncos have an ascending offense with their QB/WR/1 duo 26 and under. Current projected #2 WR David Moore has been all over the place as a slot/#4 guy, so if McLaurin is able to able to win the #2 job out of the preseason, the Broncos might be in a better spot to continue their upwards trajectory and McLaurin could be a dark horse RotY candidate without a great TE or pass-catching HB to siphon off many targets.

Second Round: Falcons G Alijah Vera-Tucker (55th overall) - With an elite HB and QB, the Falcons are a very OL friendly team as evidenced by former 1st round picks and reclamation projects from other teams thriving here. With an open spot at RG and likely being the top-rated non-Jenkins G, Tucker is the presumptuous favorite to win the job, and you have to love his ceiling as a result.

Third Round: Dolphins OLB Blaine Mitchell (73rd overall) - While the focus of the Dolphins was predictably on offense, they did have a starting spot at LOLB available, and Mitchell is going to be in the mix. There are only so many stats to throw around, so no matter what the team/system, all LBs or DL or whatever are not going to produce elite stat lines. With a balanced makeup, if the prospect sheet was to be believed, Mitchell could be a sneaky good player in that annual 70-ish tackles, 5-7 sacks+INTs, 3-5 FFs+FRs kind of deal that is underrated and outstanding for someone who will probably be making under $10 mil through his three year rookie contract.

Fourth Round: Eagles CB Champ Hill (124th overall) - The Eagles have been one of the best defensive teams over the past handful of seasons, but they are continuously cap-strapped. If they pretty much have to keep hold there for a little while, Hill will be locked into a slot corner role on what is the best unit of this defense. He could end up providing a lot of value for a late 4th rounder, and given both starting CBs are in their 30s, it wouldn't be unexpected if he becomes a full-time starter here at some point if he develops well.

Fifth Round: Giants HB Lance Smith (143rd overall) - The Giants have a good track record of getting the most out of 3rd-5th round HBs. They will probably not be able to get another player into the HB room, so Smith could wind up winning the #2 job. The #1 is Josh Jacobs, who has little track record being a 1st round pick from a season ago. I'm not saying that Smith has a remotely decent chance of being the #1 ever, but above all else, we don't know how healthy Jacobs will be in a full-time role, so that could lead to some unexpected snap counts for the 5th rounder.

Sixth Round: Browns SS Dana Nelson (163rd overall) - Every season, there's at least one late round SS that makes a sizeable impact in a backup role and ends up sticking around the league a decade and possibly gets a starting job somewhere. The Giants have the better track record of backup SS play, but I just did them, so I will choose the Browns guy over the Colts guy

Seventh Round: Express C DeRon Means (206th overall) - To continue choosing a different position and team each round, I'm going with the backup C over a number of DTs and MLBs. If HB Miles Sanders makes great strides in his second season, the Express could have one of the scariest offenses in the league, and if Means gets on the field quite a bit being the top backup, he could get some good development and be in contention of remaining in the league for the remainder of the project.

Favorite Class : Denver Broncos

WR Terry McLaurin (27th overall)
DT Tyler Lancaster (59th overall)
TE Kyle Pitts (91st overall)
G Jamal Adkins (23rd overall)
CB Sam Young (155th overall)
MLB Gene Briggs (187th overall)
HB John Miller (219th overall)

Team like the Packers and Seahawks have seemingly high floor draft classes as their selections have a decent likelihood of fitting into certain roles with some chances of getting expanded roles in the future. However, I like a lot of the high upside classes that teams like the Dolphins, 49ers, and Falcons possess. The one that I feel has the best combo of highest floor/highest ceiling though is the Broncos. It is not out of the realm of possibility that those first three picks are Week 1 starters on a great team. G Adkins is a bit of a wild card. I cannot imagine that the Broncos won't go out and get a free agent to fill their LG role, but the interior OL of this team has been more injured than the average team, so if Adkins can get a top backup job somewhere, he could get some juicy playing time in his 3+ years with the team. The other three are probably not going to see the field much or at all as rookies being probable #4 CB, #3 MLB, and #4 HB, but perhaps one will surprise me.

Obviously team comp matters for best class but just because you mentioned the Broncos. I found it funny when I was updating my sheet because the Vikings would pick and then the Broncos would immediately mimic their pick directly after (or a similar pick). So they ended up with very similar draft classes

Round 1 - Vikings QB, Broncos WR
Round 2 - Vikings DT, Broncos DT
Round 3 - Vikings CB, Broncos TE
Round 4 - Vikings G, Broncos G (Vikings did grab a WR with their earlier pick)
Round 5 - Vikings CB, Broncos CB
Round 6 - Vikings OLB, Broncos MLB
Round 7 - Vikings FS, Broncos HB (not that the Broncos would take one but there was no more FS left here)

Free Agency

See all those players in the free agent sheet? Now is the time to attempt to sign them to your team ahead of the preseason. I say attempt because you are in theory competing against the other 31 teams for the services of all available free agents.

Unlike the three offseason events involving signings, the base/desired deal that I will eventually list may not be enough to sign them, and more likely will not if it is one of the premier free agents available. If you do intend to seek out one or more of those players, you will probably want to send out a custom offer in excess of what they want, whether that means years, total money, signing bonus, or what's usually the case, a combination of the three.

You may not offer a contract to a player that goes beyond their age 34 season unless the base deal already extends beyond that. If a free agent is 31 right now and wants a two-year contract, you may go as far as four years because that would take him through his age-34 season (31, 32, 33, 34). If another free agent is also 31 and wants a five-year contract, you can offer him those five years but no more than that. Any player 28 and under is not affected by this rule as the max contract length, seven years, will take them through their age-34 season or younger.

Not every free agent is up on the sheet. I would estimate that somewhere around 25% of all free agents are there. The free agent sheet just lists the Top 8 and Bottom 2 at each position. If there's a certain kind of player that you are looking for that either isn't or don't know if they are on the sheet, feel free to ask me, and I will get back to you if such a player fits that description.

There will be three periods of free agency, each subsequent period spanning fewer real life days than the previous one. Here are the tentative real life days each period will last:
1st - 7 days
2nd - 4 days
3rd - 1 day

Here are some sample contract offers that I will accept, including to more simple approaches:
4 / $20.00 mil / $6.00 mil
3 years default + $2 mil total salary + $750k signing bonus
2 years default

When you give me an offer, you are offering my consent to offer the player the closest deal that he will consider , meaning that if you offer 4 / $18.00 mil / $5.00 mil and he will only consider it when it is 4 / $19.00 mil / $5.60 mil, I will offer him the latter. If that does not sit well with you, then you have the simpler options I previously laid out or you can explicitly say not to offer the contract unless he will consider those exact terms.

When you PM me the offers, I want you to include a header that says "[Your Team]'s Offers" so that I don't accidentally open them . In addition to being the commissioner, I am also in charge of the Pumpkins (and I might take the initiative for another team or two), so there could be some conflict of interest. Thus, the best way around that is for me to not open those PMs until the deadline for the current phase has passed. I have default PM settings, so you can tell if and when I open a PM of yours. Out of fairness, I will publicly reveal my offers once the deadline has passed and before I open up any PMs.

Under no circumstances may you ask me if so and so player will consider a certain deal or anything of that nature . You may ask me general questions regarding free agency but nothing that goes against the spirit of it or give you a competitive advantage. If you do have a question and use the PM system instead of the topic or Discord, make sure that you are clear that you are asking a question, or I might not open it out of fear the PM will contain contract offers.

There are two types of contract offers that I will immediately discard:
1. Any mentioning of the word maximum pertaining to total salary and/or signing bonus
2. A massive one year contract (possibly two-year contracts depending on the situation)

The first one I have actually received in the past. I threw it out because it is both unfair in the laziest of ways and also impossible as you can go quite high in total salary, and I do not want to spend an hour inputting a single offer

The second one is also unfair to teams with lots of cap space to maintain artificial flexibility for future seasons by using up a lot of cap space this season and then sign that same player next season to an uncontested market or below-market contract in the following offseason in a process they can repeat as many times as they can/want.

Also due to fairness, any cuts you wish to make during free agency must be done well ahead of time to give other users enough of a chance to make a bid on their services:
- 96 hours prior to the end of Period 1
- 48 hours prior to the end of Period 2
- No cuts allowed in Period 3

Most users should have been told when they signed their rookies in the spreadsheet, Discord, or via PM of their cap space and roster holes entering free agency. If I did not, feel free to consult the roster sheet and compare with the roster requirements listed in the first column or ask me what your holes are. Should free agency end with there still being holes on your roster, the AI will fill those holes for you. You do not have to be under the salary cap at the end of free agency. I will give users several days after free agency ends to do so.

One big thing that I want to add is that many positions are very sensitive to starting status relative to their rating. QBs, HBs, FSs, CBs, and several other positions have expectations to start when they are around 82 or above. If you desire to sign someone at 82+ and are not expecting them to start for you, I highly urge you to offer them a contract no longer than 2 years in length . It is possible that they might demand a trade after just one season, but attempting to sign them to a 1 or 2 year deal will significantly reduce the financial penalty you would be dealt with if having to move on from them while they are still under contract.
