In the castle town there's a hole in the wall on the screen to the left, can you retrieve the other items from there? Normally you can transfer the crystals and boss items that way if it's on a different file, I'm not sure if it works for all of them or just the one for the most recent preceding chapter, though.
I think this is so far the
only
thing the different save files are used for but it does show that they check each other. It does make replaying for secrets easier too.
Ooh right I forgot about that, that totally works. I'm surprised since you can't even go to the town in chapter 3 but it does work for chapter 4.
