I was all up in Widow's face quite often - even her most time-wasting attacks have ways for you to cheat in hits. I'm at the tail portion of the game now and no boss has strong armed me into thinking the correct answer was to hang back. I was more consistently thinking "how can I be continuing to whittle them while they're doing this?" Hornet is a hunter! A hoonter must hoont

Well alright, but I found it wasy easier to beat her by being patient (reserving pure aggro for when she summons her bells, clinging to the walls a lot during phase 2) and if that later turns out to be impossible I am not gonna be happy.

Forebrother Signis and Gron fuckin' suck. The fact that you can get combo'd into the lava is some horseshit. I've killed Signis twice only to get launched into the lava while trying to finish off Gron and I hate it.

It's funny because I get significantly less aggressive as I get better, at least for a bit, because I don't have iframes to abuse anymore.

That's the only fight so far where I went to town using the Rosary Cannon.

Without spoilers, can anyone give me an approximation as to how long Act Three is? I sense that I'm about to reach it, but man, I've already been playing so much.

It's fairly short in terms of optimal path but it entirely depends on how much you've already done. If you've already explored all or most of the map you have access to then you won't have to do much. If you've been ignoring optional areas and sidequests then you're going to be playing catchup.

Cool, then it shouldn't be too long (barring difficulty spikes that keep me struggling). I've found all the fleas, so I assume I've scoped out most of what I can do.
Burnin, Blazin
Act 3 should be somewhat shorter than Act 1. I think for me, it was something like 15 hours act 1, 20 hours act 2, 8 hours act 3? I ended up with 94% completion, with most of the missing stuff being from Act 3 though. I wasn't quite as thorough there.

The last boss took me longer than any other in the game, though not by a huge margin.

Big ending spoilers: I can't believe they ended the game with to be continued...
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
If you want to compare it to HK, critical path in Act 3 would be like (minor spoilers) saving all the Dreamers until the very end including the bosses that guard them, except maybe a little more involved . Plus (major spoilers) both Abyss visits, except with actual danger.

Not sure how serious this is but if you're talking about Mr. Mushroom, this was a hidden sidequest and secret ending stinger in the original game too. I don't doubt they have plans to set more games in this setting, but it's mostly a joke

Wait do you only get (ending) the "to be continued" if you did the mushroom quest? I was surprised either way 'cause honestly I figured they'd pull a Moon Studios (ori) and move on to something new after such a sequel that seems like it accomplishes everything they ever wanted, Though it could also just be for DLC which is confirmed anyway.
that said i do really like lace and obviously the trend of your rival being the next protagonist needs to continue so i want a lace game now. it'd fit really well anyway, she's got a very different personality than hornet and she's in a place where she can start living her own life and have her own journey

Personally I would rather they have Hollow Knight themself as the protagonist of a hypothetical third game (I am a 'Godhome is canon' truther now). Not sure how they'd manage it as they'd have to shrink him or scale everything else up (that could be cool). The series is named after it, after all! And I think it would be nice to continue to explore the relationship between the three main siblings

I feel like a) Hornet's dialogue in Silksong should be a lot more confused about what happened if it were and b) how would that even work? Dude becomes a dreamscape void god.

Well. All I can say is some things make more sense if Godhome is canon, other things make less!

Also maybe some confusion here: "Hollow Knight" is not the name of the protagonist of Hollow Knight.

RE: aggressive vs defensive playstyles

I feel like which approach works best entirely depends on the player. For me personally, I find getting too aggressive leads to me recklessly getting hits by attacks I shouldn't have which causes me to play pretty patiently.

That said, the last phase of most bosses are usually so intense, best to get up all in there at that point and end it. I can't believe I skipped the Pollip sidequest until now - literally the only one from Act 1 I didnt do - and it had the best reward. Now that I can make my cogflies venomous , I throw a bunch of those puppies out in the last phase of a boss and they're cooked.
Welcome to your Divinity.
It's probably pretty crest based, too! Something like Reaper feels like it would reward that methodical play quite a bit while Hunter and Wanderer feel more coded for rabid little hell gremlins like me

100% beated.
Yeah, that ending was a letdown. I kept waiting for the actual final boss to happen but it never did. What were they thinking ending it with a rehashed Lace fight with the same void attacks that literally every enemy in Act 3 has? Why even tease the void heart Knight / Void Entity from the first game if there isn't going to be an epic fight?

Team Cherry had infinite money and time to make this game. How did they drop the ball so hard in Act 3???

This isn't me trying to show off (I'll remind you all I got stuck on Moorwing for like an hour) but Br ood mo ther was like... it was a "wait, that's it?" "is there a catch?" "is this really a boss or...?" fight for me. Maybe I just fought it late (I completely missed the little gap in the ceiling on my map that lead to that area until I was nearly done the act) but it just... shot out some flies, I jumped and killed them all in 1 hit, then it shot out a few blobs and just sat there and I just went up to it and smacked it a bunch and... I mean, I dunno, it just died? I forgot it was even a boss, even when I looked it up to see what people were talking about with the comments on how hard it was I couldn't remember where or when I fought it.

I don't think aggression works for most bosses and I usually have to play patiently and really pick my spots but this boss just... stood there and didn't... do anything? So of course I smacked it. I dunno! I maybe got lucky or am missing something.
Finally beat Signis and Gron after a few more attempts. This is somehow the first boss to make me exhaust all of my shell fragments during the attempts. I don't really know why I kept choking on the last part.

It turns out the main thing beating the boss leads to is something I can't even interact with yet. Sometimes I wonder if I should be focusing on the main quest more. Cogwork Dancers were significantly easier than the shit I've been doing by comparison. Though they were really cool and I felt a little sad during the final phase.

Side note, the runback to Cogwork Dancers is pretty easy if you have the High Halls bench and the Clawline since you only encounter one enemy and can zip over it during its wake animation. Though I only needed to do this once so maybe there's some RNG that I'm not accounting for.

This really isn't a game that feels like it wants you to wait for openings and that fight especially makes it apparent. If you let up on the offense all of a sudden there's goo all over the floor and four adds controlling space in a tight room with you and you haven't hit the boss in 10+ seconds, meanwhile playing hyper aggro you could've been hitting the boss non-stop and solving a lot of those problems before they even really surfaced. I personally love how much the game rewards fast-paced aggression but I can see how people who don't want to play that way could run into a lot of issues with a lot of fights.

I mean I think this just about covers it.

It's the exact same problem people have with Savage Beastfly, BTW. People are walking into that fight with minimal upgrades and not yet confident enough to use spells and tools and getting their ass kicked by lack of crowd control because they're playing defense. (Though enemy spawn and attack pattern rng makes that one a pain too)

I think I probably need to try using Silk Skills again. I actually unequipped my Silk Skill entirely because I had too many instance of accidentally using it and then dying because I couldn't heal. But now that I have more spools that might be less an issue.

Also Sherma is precious and must be protected at all costs. Fighting those enemies while Sherma was fearfully clinking his instruments together in the background is the most determined to win that I've been in this game.

i didn't realize sherma wasn't female until after i beat the game btw am i the only one.
I thought Sherma was female for a long time too. I think there's only been a single instance (that I've seen so far in Act 2) where a pronoun was used to refer to him (quest description).

How important are the expendable tools to winning? And are they actually fun to use? Because the vibe I get from discussions is similar to Elden Ring with 'just use Spirit Ashes' which didnt address the issue that, while optimal, it made the game less fun.

They help a lot. There's one that is extremely fun to use IMO ( wheel ) and some others that felt pretty good or satisfying. The very best one isn't particularly fun to use.

Dunno how far in you are, but I'm in Act 2. I'm a little torn on the tools. I think they are fun to use but maybe too powerful. They're basically your best option for doing damage at range, and they help a ton when a boss has limited safe openings. I haven't encountered a boss that would be unbeatable without tools, but several of them would be significantly more miserable in my opinion.
Gin
Unflappable, unserious, unimportant
I think the tools are very fun and give you a lot of options on how you want to augment your playstyle. You can do some silly things that might seem "cheesy" compared to toolless but I dont think they trivialize the gameplay since so much of combat is about movement anyways. They are VERY powerful when used optimally but you have to give up a lot to really abuse them.

The only thing that is not fun about tools is the economy.

That said I know a bunch of people who pretty much ignored tools the entire game and did completely fine.

I definitely abuse tools. No guilt whatsoever. That's what they're there for
while you slept, the world changed
I definitely use tools - primarily to solve annoying problems while exploring and as closers against particularly troublesome bosses. They add a lot of very fun options you can cater to your taste - and the fun is multiplied by them being so overtly designed as a solution to problems that would be a headache with just your needle.

Economy hasn't really been an issue using them this way either - I'm usually scratching at the shard cap and I've got a bunch in my inventory for emergencies. They do feel very strong so I'm assuming the economy is there in the first place to A) Encourage you not to skip every non-pilgrim enemy B) Add a layer of hesitation from just dumping them nonstop against bosses and C) Give you a nudge to go check out another area if you're getting folded by a single boss to the point that you burn through your supply

I wound up continuing to play despite my previous whining and got the first ending (which is enough for me given how much I struggled lol). I tried using tools on a few bosses but I honestly found them too awkward to use. Pausing to hit RB plus up or down tripped me up and often got me killed. So technically I got ending A never actually using tools on any of the battles where I defeated a boss.

The two worst bosses that I fought were Widow and Lace 2 I hate those fights so much.
**R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile)
I basically never use sub-weapons or magic in any game, I'm a base-attack only type of person.

So I just used tacks/spike traps here 'cause I can just throw them out and not have to aim or think much. Eventually cogflies.

That said, I did use Conchshell a bit eventually. It does massive damage if the enemy stands still and takes multiple hits from it. I'd just fire multiple into some things if there's a fat enemy at the end of a gauntlet that stands still for moment.
Listen if you're a large boss in a small arena and your main attack is flinging yourself at random all over the screen, all I'm saying is you had it coming if you die to me spamming traps everywhere.
I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways.

Castlevania ditched expendable subweapons for an MP bar though. Just like Souls ditched farming healing herbs for the Estus system (and then reintroduced farming in Bloodborne for some reason). I dont mind using resources if they replenish, but there's no worse feeling than using some one-use items and then dying to a boss.
It's Reyn Time.
Yeah I just still don't get the system of expending them. I can see an angle for it of like "we don't want you spamming tools every attempt non-stop, we want you to save them for when you're sure you can get the clear" but like... it's objectively better to just alt+f4 as you die instead of letting the game return you to the bench and take your shards. I didn't do that because it'd feel like cheating a bit (though I did save+quit to return to benches) but... yeah, I dunno.
The correct Souls comparison is not Estus flasks, it's throwable rocks and fire bottles and shit like that
http://i.imgur.com/k0v0z3q.gif
Those are very tertiary though. No one ever said "having trouble with the Capra Demon? Get more throwables" like they are with the Skong tools. I would not have enjoyed Souls as much if that was the recommended solution to bosses.
